If you were to make a list of all the people thoroughly deserving of a multi-million bonus, RIM’s former CEOs, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, would surely be right down at the bottom beside Elop and Ballmer.
So it might come as a surprise to hear that the former pair has walked away with a whopping $12 million between them. Well done, guys.
While the duo could do no wrong prior to the arrival of iOS and Android, the past few years saw them drive RIM nearly into the ground, much to the ire of shareholders. Ultimately, the pair was replaced in January by current CEO, Thorsten Heins.
However, a 6-K filing from RIM explains: “Messrs. Lazaridis and Balsillie revolutionized the worldwide wireless industry with the introduction of the BlackBerry and forever changed how the world communicates.
“Under their leadership, the Company successfully navigated many challenges and quickly scaled to become a global company and industry leader with sales in over 175 countries and more than 17,000 employees worldwide.
“Over the last decade, the Company experienced tremendous growth, with annual revenues increasing from $294 million to just under $20 billion.”
No mention of launching the BlackBerry PlayBook without a native email client? I’m shocked.
