Do you need to be 18 to get a 30-day SIM only contract?

Yes. You also need to have a debit card as well.

Ask your parents to consider getting one for you. It can work out a lot cheaper than pay as you go depending on your usage.

Why do you need a debit card?

Credit check. Pretty sure every network does one. Three did one for me on my sim only.

Ask Mummy or Daddy, if they say no, wait until you're a grown up to buy grown up products. You can probably do as much damage to your life with credit products as you can with a litre bottle of Vokda.

There's a reason they don't sell credit products to children, they're not responsible, or more importantly from a financial standpoint, legally accountable (in most cases), for their misuse and abuse of them.

I don't know if you need a debit card (mine's set up through one, but I've never tried without), but I do know they'll do a credit check. T-Mobile credit checked me for my £10 per month SIMO deal haha :p.
