How necessary is 3G for BlackBerry Messenger?

I’m looking at a new phone that doesn’t have 3G. Can I still use BlackBerry Messenger?

Hi Pocahontas.
It's not required for BlackBerry Messenger.
3g gives you greater speed than 'edge' for internet etc, but Messenger doesn't require the 3g protocol.

Yes, mrew is right.
RIM use data compression on their servers - email and BBM work just fine with the worst of signals.

Top up BBM??? Huh?
It's part of the BlackBerry Data add-on. And 3G, 2G??? No difference...

Maybe you could explain what exactly you mean? ;)
