Do I need to have 3G on to receive picture messages on my iPhone 4?

Normally I keep the 3G and data roaming and mobile data turned off on my iphone 4 because I only really use it on my wifi network. Sometimes I need to look something up when I am away from home, and I turn on the mobile data for a bit. The last 2 times I have done this, a picture message from a friend has come through as I turned on the mobile data, marked from days or weeks before. Why does it only come through when I turn on mobile data? Why won't it come through when I am attached to wifi?

The reason they don't come through via wifi is - mms are send via your network's wap servers. You need to use their access point (APN).
But you do not need 3G for mms. You can enable data and receive mms via 2G or EDGE. Just disable 3G - that'll keep your battery going.
I'm sure there might be a way to receive mms via wifi by reconfiguring the apn, but I doubt that can be done on the iPhone where you have limited access to the apn settings.
