Would 500MB of mobile data last me a month for sending emails and checking Facebook? Does Facebook use a lot of data for simply checking the NewsFeed?

For email and Facebook checking it should be enough. But if you add apps download and the occasional videoclip, you might be in trouble quickly.
You can install a data monitor app and check for a few days what your daily usage is. There are both free and paid for versions available. For obvious reasons I'd pick one that isn't ad-supported - the app itself would use data etc...

PS also, it varies significantly from OS to OS - my main phone has been a Nokia N9 for some time. But I use other devices inbetween. iPhone 5 and some Androids have used 4 to 6 times the data that my N9 uses for the same stuff.
For light browsing, you could install Opera Mini. That browser compresses webpages on Opera's servers and sends you a mobile optimised version of the page. It saves up to 90% data. It isn't completely compliant with all web standards, and it doesn't play video, but most things work just fine.
