Maybe it’s just me, but 7 Little Words sounds like something a snot-nosed little kid might say before: “Get the furg out of my face.” Shut up, you hypothetical little brat.
Pushing my apparent insanity aside for a few moments, 7 Little Words is also a word game for iOS and Android. It’s received praise from none other than O, The Oprah Magazine, so you know it’s gonna be good. Am I being sarcastic? I don’t even know any more.
The blurb on the Android Market and App Store boasts: “you’ve never played anything like it before.” Indeed, it’s hard to believe that no one thought of it before now; it’s such a simple concept, and also rather good.
At the top of the screen you’ve got seven crossword-style clues, such as “chesspiece – 6 letters” and “penguin – 10 letters”. As the name of the game suggests, there are seven words to find in each level.
At the bottom of the screen there are 20 word fragments. Putting them together builds the answers, and every fragment is used in every level; there aren’t any red herrings.
The answer for “chesspiece” (spoiler alert) is “KNIGHT”, so you tap “KN” + “IG” + “HT” to put them together. One down, six to go. Incidentally, there’s no penalty for wrong guesses, and no time limit. 7 Little Words is one of the most chilled-out things you’ll ever play.
There’s an element of math in 7 Little Words Too. You know that a six-letter word will be made up of three twos, while a seven will be two twos and a three.
You initially have access to one pack of 30 levels, but there are tons more to purr-chase for 69p a pop. What do I mean by “tons”? Seventeen, obviously, with two more on the way. Of course, if you buy ‘em all you’re into console game territory, but that’s between you and your wallet.
And that’s 7 Little Words for you, bro. I don’t think there’s much more I can say. It looks pleasant enough, and the sound is minimal, but it’s all about the wordage.
- Words are good
- A wee bit of math
- Totally chilled
- Not massively challenging since there are no “mistakes”...
- ...but if you’re anything like me, you’ll punish yourself for messing up
- Froyo (Android 2.2) or above required
Summary: 7 Little Words is ideal for fans of crosswords, anagrams and wordsearches. Sad as it might sound, I do enjoy all three, and as such I highly recommend 7 Little Words.
