Is an 8GB iPhone 3GS big enough?
I’d only be looking to store a couple of hundred songs and some pics but I could move the pics to my PC to save space.

Sure. I'm a bit like that - I'm typing this on a Nokia C7 with 8 GB and a 32GB card - I only have 6 or so GB on it in total. LOL
Of course, you need to have some space for apps, too, but if you don't mind regular housekeeping, you'll be okay.
On the other hand, whatever you save moneywise, you'll lose again when you try to sell the phone - that is worth considering

I would say no. I'm sure that during the life of your phone you'll get more songs, more apps, more photos and videos from the iPhone's camera and so on and as the storage is not expandable if you managed to fill it up there's no way around it apart from wasting time moving stuff. It's also a pretty old phone as it is.

I used to have a 8gb 3G, it will be full up before you know it and then you'll have to constantly change the data on there, I'd personally have 16gb as a the minimal.
