I have just got given a 9780 as a work phone and I just dont get "It".

The "IT" being why what feels like a feature phone but is worth £40 pm.
There dont seem to be SatNav provided. (Thers is a sort of Google Maps)
There are some apps...
but no touch screen.
Lame "touch pad" interface
dont work is weak 3g signal when the Sim on a Nokia C7 works fine (Well its the network technical support blaims the blackbury)

Can someone explane to me what I am missing here.
Ive played with it and all I got was anoyed and a acking Thum

For all intensive purpose I have the same phone. A 9700 which I put OS6 on myself.

And I cannot wait for my real smartphone to come in 10 days (gS2)

I'll try and give some advice;
*Set up your emails - Most are ok, but some you'll have to forward to another email (defeating the entire point) so you might end up getting FWs from one of your accounts meaning its a mare to reply using the BB

*Install google maps - much better than the bundled app

*Install a pdf reader and office tools - Oddly you can read pdfs as an email attachment but if they are then saved on your phone RIM want to change you an app for that. If you can look 'elsewhere' to get the software, do.

Ultimately though BBs are now dreadful phones, they just didnt bother to keep on power with the rest of the smart phones when they started getting big 3 years ago. I'd have a talk with your boss and ask is one really necessary.

iPhones are now most business phones of choice and apart from the 'security' of BBs (redundant if your phone gets nicked) they are actually more hassle to use for replying to emails and looking stuff up on the web than any other smart phone.

good luck

Hmmm... Obviously, if you're given a 'workphone' you don't like, it's not the phone's fault, is it? You wouldn't have bought it, and you didn't. You'd rather have a touchscreen than one of the industry's 3 best Qwerty keyboards? Well, your bosses want you to type. Not RIM's fault.
Some companies now install software on their staff's phones that tracks how much time you dedicate to what app. An hour of Angry Birds? Your fired.
You get 3 days of angry birds free battery life out of the Bold 9780 - for your bosses RIM deliver a good thing.

As to signal: my Bold beat all Android and iOS devices I used in terms of antenna performance.
Don't get me wrong - as a competition to today's leading entertainment machines, RIM have failed massively. When they finally catch up a bit they overprice. But, why would a company supply phone capable toys to their staff? I don't "get it"? Sorry, but the purpose of your rant is unclear?! You weren't betrayed by RIM into buying work instead of fun. Your bosses gave you a tool.
Excuse me if I misread something :)

If you worked for me, I'd take the damn phone off you and not bother replacing it with anything decent, a Nokia 1100 works as a phone, it's a work tool you've been provided with, not a toy. You want to play? Get a personal contract and pay it yourself, that's what your salary's for.

Your company evidently thinks the BB best aids your work (or they'd have given you something else). Yes, high end 'droids and the iPhone 4S are "cooler", and do more stuff, but they're nowhere near as productive for most work related stuff, that's what BBs do best (still).

That phone can be bought for as low as £24 a month with no upfront cost from CPW the reason why its a 40 quid a month deal is due to the company paying for unlimited texts/internet (and probably mins too) as its a company contract. the last thing they would want is for you to be unable to be contactable...

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:06

Wow, sense, twice in one day :p.

I agree with all of Jan and Treab's points, your company gave you a phone to use as a...ahem...phone...for communicating...if they wanted you to play around with it, they'd have given you a more "fun", phone, evidently they want it to enhance your ability to earn the company more money, to put it bluntly.

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:10

tbh he should feel grateful... thats a good phone for a work phone... the nhs gives out old nokias... i think they still use 8000's...

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:18

As I said, if he worked for me, I'd give him a Nokia 1100, amazing battery life and a solid (2G), signal. With unlimited texts/mins, they'd always be reachable. Also, no need to waste money on data plans or worry about staff losing/breaking £300ish phones.

This smacks of ungratefulness, if your working for a company that hand out S2s or iPhone 4S' to the normal mid-level workforce, you're the bloody lucky exception, not the rule. In my company only the senior partners have ANY say in which phones they get. Everyone else gets a "crappy", Nokia.

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:19

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:33

I need one more promotion before I can choose my work phone :p, until then, I'm stuck with the crappy Nokia haha.

Though with spelling like that, I doubt anyone pays him much haha :D.

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:39

a lawyer with a nokia... oO the truth will out matty ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:47

I never use it, I gave the SIM a special home in the bottom of a drawer, I just hand my "personal", number out to clients.

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:49

AHA so your skimming off the company ;) told you truth will out :p

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:51

I'm contracted a mandatory business phone, so they have to give me one whether I use it or stick it in a drawer. Not exactly skimming off the company :p.

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:54

i meant your skimming clients off the company ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 20:58

Well since my business card is printed with the company logo/name on it, hardly ;).

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:01

let me guess... is the company name..

(using your username)

matt101101 PLC

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:04

We're not a PLC. We're a partnership. Though I feel we've (once again), gotten massively off topic :p.

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:06

i dunno... was there really a topic to this one?

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:10

Either trolling child or ungrateful worker...maybe...? My work has nothing to so with either ;)

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:12

and terrible spelling... such as..

My work has nothing to so with either

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:17

My god, I actually wrote that? I'm terribly sorry...That's what you get if you try to play Forza & surf phone forums haha ;).

The missus says it wouldn't have happened if I was watching TV with her haha :D....I think she's insinuating I pay no attention to the rubbish she watches :p.

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:19

forza... which one? personally i have been playing battlefield 3 which is good but a likkle buggy... x-factor is crap thats why ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:27

4, the new one. I'm not really into shooting stuff, mainly because I'm crap at it. Top 1% in the world on Forza...probably around top 90% at CoD etc...(if CoD & Battlefield measured in percentages, which AFAIK, they don't).

How did you guess she watches the X-Factor haha :D...

Treab  Oct. 29, 2011 at 21:31

cause most women do ;)

apparently (you will regret this) shooters test the persons frontal lobe its ability to respond and consider multiple situations at the same time... whereas racers only have a single pre-arranged route which is why its easier...

wow we have gone off topic... were totally off topic on the idea of the site :D

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 29, 2011 at 23:24

Personally, I find shooting harder, but I know people who can get ridiculously high KD on CoD, ask them to drive a car; they can't keep a a Fiesta on the straight and narrow...Harder is opinion, in my opinion :p, I can tame a 1000bhp mustang without TCS or ABS, but I can't fire an MP5 to save my life...

Oh, and we specialise in off topic, it's what we do best :p.
