While the Asus-built Google Nexus 7 is priced entirely reasonably (particularly now that it’s had a storage increase and price chop), it wasn’t exactly the truly budget $99 tablet that’d been rumoured.
A not-so-juicy new benchmark for a mysterious Asus device suggests the elusive $99 tablet might be on its way after all.
A quick gander at the GLBenchmark results shows we are in fact looking at the Asus ME172V. Sound familiar?
Earlier in the week, an African Asus representative confirmed a new 7in Asus tablet was on the way, with model number ME172V and specs including a resolution of 1024 x 600.
GLBenchmark suggests the Asus ME172V will run Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.1), with a 1GHz processor.
The Asus ME172V is also said to have a microSD slot, which probably rules out Google Nexus involvement. Remember, microSD cards are too “confusing” for Nexus consumers. Ahem.
All in all, the Asus ME172V doesn’t sound like anything worth getting too excited about, hence the $99 tablet rumours resurfacing. Having said that, it’s still not clear where the Asus ME172V will be released.
