Can I activate an iphone without a computer?

No, to activate it you need a pc/Mac with iTunes installed and an internet connection. Once activated, you can go about your iPhone business without a computer (except for software updates that are delivered via iTunes, too). Maybe a friend of yours will allow you to activate it on their PC? Or an internet cafe? Oh, and if you want to use iTunes or the appstore you need a credit card to set up an account (even IF you only want to download free apps. It's for 'security' - in other words to hook you LOL)

N.B. Need I say it?
This is obviously not true anymore. Since iOS5 you can activate without a PC/Mac or iTunes...

Eventually...how did it take them until the end of 2011 to decide this was a worthwhile change in how iDevices were set-up? Post-PC era...yeah, right...tell that to the PC all iPads were linked up to, to be activated.

Yes, big turn off, that. Oh, I got Linux... so I just drive 30 clicks to a crap internet cafe to activate my €600 phone. LOL

Does iTunes not get along with Wine? I thought you could use that to run Windows programs inside Ubuntu (I assume you use Ubuntu and not some even more unusual OS)?

Hahaha that is what some Linux folks like to tell you, but nah... to get iTunes and Linux/Wine
to fully cooperate would take longer than to install Windows, activate the iPhone and uninstall Windows again...

I'm not that bigger Linux user, I just have Lubuntu on an old Samsung Netbook because it came with W7 Starter (which was too sh*t to use) and it just couldn't handle W7 ultimate which I have...erm...many copies of.
