The Adorables iOS review

The Adorables iOS reviewI have mixed feelings about Thumbstar. On the one hand, PR chap Nick is about the nicest guy you could expect to meet (er, via email, at least). But, more importantly, the games I’ve experienced to date (including i3 and Grumble&Piccolo) have been a tad… meh.

The Adorables is Thumbstar’s first internally developed title, and I’m pleased to report that it’s actually rather good.

In terms of gameplay, The Adorables combines elements of pachinko, pinball, and, uhm, floating around and collecting stuff.

In each of The Adorables’ 60 levels (spread across five worlds), the aim is to relight the Aurora Borealis. And how do you do that? By hitting each of the pins three times, of course.

As for controls, The Adorables’ Aurora Beam is activated by touching the screen, and gives our little Adorable a height boost, while titling your iDevice guides the Adorable left and right. It’s an effective little control system, for the most part. Occasionally a tad frustrating, perhaps, as you narrowly miss pins and float past at high speed, but it's all part of the fun.

Needless to say, it’s not simply a case of floating and bouncing around unhindered. As well as battling against the clock, there’s moving scenery, and a little skull-adorned portal that sends you back to the beginning. Son of a...

Less irksome/more helpful features in The Adorables include portals (in coloured pairs) and fans.

The Adorables iOS review

And that’s The Adorables. Is it any good? Well, yes. Things start out pretty slow, but the levels become more interesting as the game progresses and new elements are introduced.

One of the most striking things about the The Adorables is the visuals, adopting “Arts & crafts-style graphics with a manga-inspired twist”. The Adorables certainly looks the part.

The first world (12 levels) in The Adorables is free to play, with the remaining four worlds demanding 69p. A cheeky tactic that I don’t necessarily approve of, but it’s well worth the price of admission.

And hey, I guess you can effectively try before you buy. Go do it.

  • Looks great
  • Sounds great
  • Five worlds, 60 levels

  • A tad slow at first
  • Bit samey, I guess
  • Is it free or 69p? Cheeky devils

Summary: The Adorables is an enjoyable little pachinko-style game, and it’s incredibly easy on the eye. Like.
