Is the Alcatel OT-983 a good replacement for a Sony W995 for text & calls?

For those that own this phone, or that are in the know, would you say this is a good replacement for a Sony W995 - Only used for calls and texting? (and taking some pictures)

A second-hand W995 on eBay goes for about £45-£70 depending on condition so this Alcatel seems like a cheaper alternative. The major plus of the W995 is battery life and 8MP Auto Focus camera with flash.
Seems strange that a phone from so many years ago has better battery and camera than most phone out now.

Anyway, your suggestions appreciated!

Hi mate saw your post in the deal thread too. I've never owned either of the two phones in question but did have the SE K750i, W810i & K770i and have experience of two budget Androids; San Francisco and Galaxy Europa and now a high end Android Sensation XE.

If I were you I'd most definitely buy it. Even the budget Androids totally blow the old Sony Ericssons out the water. The capabilities of the operating system and the things you can do on them is streets ahead. Before I came to Android I had a Nokia 5800 which is roughly similar spec to your W995i. I was unsure but took the plunge with the San Fran and it was amazing in comparison. It felt almost as if I was using a mini computer at first! That was two years ago and this phone is more powerful than the San Fran.

It's totally logical that the battery life on this will be worse than your current phone. Mainly because the processor is three times more powerful and the screen is larger. Both of these eat up a hell of a lot of juice. Unfortunately the advancement in battery technology doesn't seem to have kept pace with the advancement in handsets in recent years. My old SE's used to last a few days after charging. With Androids and other modern smartphones you'll have to charge them every night. But trust me it'll be worth it.

If you want to know anything more specific just PM me. Thinking of getting one for my missus actually.

Just re read your post again. The camera on this will not be as good as the W995. But that and the battery are the only negatives I can think of. I'd still advise you to get it if you're after a new phone and on a budget. The other features off Android will hopefully compensate. Even if you end up not liking the Alcatel you could still get the majority of your money back for it on eBay. Maybe keep hold of the old phone for a couple of weeks while you test it out.
