The LGs, Sonys and HTCs of this world must dream of the kind of gadget obsession that sees eager iDisciples camping out for days just to be among the first to lay hands on the latest iPhone or iPad.
But one unlikely rival has done more than just dream – Aldi's Medion LifeTab E7316 has lived the dream, and Aldi has the empty shelves to prove it too.
That's right – Aldi has completely sold out of the 7in LifeTab slate, which only went on sale over the weekend, with the £80 price tag having clearly proved a winner with the buying public.
The Medion-made E7316 is fairly basic, but does give you a decent baseline spec of a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of on-board storage, 1GB of RAM and a (barely) acceptable 1024 x 600 screen resolution.
Throw in Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and you've got yourself a fair bit of gadget for your £80, even if battery life only extends as far as four hours.
But alas, if you haven't already bought one it's too late to try now, and what's more, with the LifeTab having been offered as a “Specialbuy”, it's a one-off deal that only lasts as long as stocks do.
The one piece of info we don't have is how many actual units did Medion supply Aldi with. Whatever the number, the clear success of the whole affair suggests this might not be the last time the cut-price retailer turns tablet vendor.
