Way back before the Kindle Fire became a reality, Amazon was rumoured to be working on a whole family of devices, namely a 7in tablet, a 10in tablet, and a smartphone.
Those Amazon smartphone rumours have been simmering gently for over a year, and now they’re about to hit boiling point. Or something.
Bloomberg has been jawing with “people with knowledge of the [Amazon smartphone]… who asked not to be identified because the plans are private.” The usual disclaimer, then.
There’s not much in the way of detail with regards to the Amazon smartphone, but it’s suggested that Apple’s mate Foxconn is - or will be - in on the manufacturing action.
Amazon is also thought to be seeking out patents covering wireless technology, in anticipation of the obligatory courtroom action.
It’s expected that the Amazon smartphone would follow in the Kindle Fire’s footsteps, with a heavily customised version of Android, and a focus on Amazon-related content.
Last November, a salty rumour suggested that the Amazon smartphone would land in late 2012. Sounds like that could be on the money after all.
