No, that’s not a typo in the headline, and no, this isn’t some two-day-late April fool’s joke. Meet Amazon’s latest signing, former Windows Phone general manager, Charlie Kindel.
He’s been drafted in to work on something top-secret, and we can’t help but feel that they’d be missing a trick if it weren’t the much-discussed Amazon Kindle smartphone.
Before we continue, I’m definitely subscribing to Martin’s notion that Kindel has “the most punchable face I've seen for a long time”. Are we allowed to say that? It’d be a playful punch, of course. Ahem.
Moving on! Charlie’s Linkedin profile reveals that he’s beavering away on “something secret” in a “totally new area” for Amazon, “something wonderful”.
Given the reported delay in bringing the Amazon smartphone to market, coupled with Amazon’s relative lack of experience in the mobile field (Kindle Fire aside), it’d make sense to put Kindel at the helm.
The Amazon Kindle Fire shifted an impressive six million units in Q4 2012 (according to IDC), but it remains to be seen if there’s a market for an Amazon Kindle smartphone.
