Why don't Android app updates start automatically?

I have some apps set to update automatically on the Android Market. It looks as though they start but nothing happens. I have to cancel them then manually set them to download which defeats the whole point in them being automatic!!!!

I find the same. Happens quite frequently upon first download - nevermind updates.
By the way: you shouldn't (in my humble opinion) set updates to 'automatic'! Now and again an updated version cause problems - be it on some devices or on certain OS flavours or in general. I would always read update log and recent 'reviews' first.

It's a weird glitch, that's been around for a good few years now. However, I agree with Jan in saying don't update automatically anyway. You never know which update will end up breaking the app (or possibly more *dun dun duuuun!*).
