I think it's number one in the USA, right? Is it number one in the world overall?

Yes. Most popular by numbers sold. There is no way to measure if it actually being used.

as ct says - in numbers currently sold, it definitely is the most popular smartphone OS, in 'active userbase' number it probably still trails behind Symbian.
But actual 100% accurate figures are impossible to obtain.
If you read charts and pies etc... Take a pinch of salt. All just guesstimates.
I occasionally frequent an irish phone chatboard, and though there's a lot of 'symbian is dead' talk, symbian related threads are actually the most popular in terms of views and posts.
