Is Android’s Google Maps more up to date than the web version?

I've heard rumours of this, anyone know?

I thought it just downloaded the data from the web which was the same as the standard website?

That is what I would have assumed also... the phone app is just rendering what it gets from google's servers... But who knows?! Still not found anything about this on, ahem, google LOL

It uses a vector rendering system instead of fixed tiles so it's possible it could be using a different data source.

:p Strangely, there have been a few reports from Android users that their phone-based Google Maps is more up to date than the web version. For example, some new-builds appear on Android but not on the web.
