It's not much of a surprise, but nonetheless we're duty bound to report the news that Rovio's Angry Birds has claimed the key awards for Best Game and App of the Year at the annual Appy Awards last night.
The awards were dished out based on votes cast by 30,000 mobile users around the world, and confirm Angry Birds' place not just as the most popular games regardless of mobile platform, but as one of the most popular apps of all time outright.
“It's been just amazing. First of all winning the public vote for best game and then afterwards the judges decided for us to be app of the year,” said Rovio spokesperson Oona Hilkamo. “It's been a great year for us.”
And far from resting on its laurels, Angry Birds is continuing the tradition of dishing out a new expansion for the wildly popular bird-throwing game each holiday season. The Easter expansion is due to land next week, we're told, and will dish up 15 new levels, no doubt including appropriately themed add-ons like, well, eggs.
Other winners at the Appys included eBay Fashion (best fashion app), Amazon (best lifestyle app), Skype (best money-saving app), Spotify (best music app), Adobe Photoshop (best photography app), Sky Sports News (best sport app), Google Maps (best time-saver app), Facebook (best time-waster) and Trip Advisor (best travel app).
