Google I/O 2014 is officially scheduled for June 25-26 this year, but after last year’s washout (loads of devices were rumoured, none of which materialised), we won’t get our hopes up for much in the way of announcements.
Indeed, that’s pretty much the story here, with the Google Nexus 8 and Android 4.5 tipped to turn up the following month in a separate event.
That’s the word according to Android Geeks, which reached out to “a person familiar with the matter” – supposedly a Google Dublin employee.
Said employee tells us to expect a Google Nexus 8 and Android 4.5 in July, while Google I/O 2014 will focus on services and stuff.
More recently, we’ve been told that Google will move out of the cutthroat 7in category, and instead throw its weight behind an 8in Nexus 8, perhaps produced by trusty old Asus – the Taiwanese manufacturer behind the Nexus 7.
As for the next version of Android, it’s anyone’s guess what it’ll be called at this stage. The current version is of course KitKat, so my money’s on Lion Android 4.5.
Inevitably the rumours will go into overdrive as we approach July, and we suspect Google will throw in some cheeky blink-and-you’ll-miss-it teasers at I/O 2014, a bit like these Key Lime Pie Easter eggs from last year’s event.
