Titanium Backup - for text and everything. Get free version from Market and give it a try.

There is SMS Backup that sort of works - it failed on me a few times.

Handcent - which I actually use as my main message app has a backup facility.

I don't back up my texts, but I do use Titanium Backup for backing up other stuff on a regular basis. It's one of the few apps which I've actually bothered to buy the full version of.

Titanium Backup now has a new XML based backup for phone setting, calls and SMS. It now works across different ROMs.
