Apple to Amazon: the iPad mini does have stereo speakers, you cheeky gits

Apple to Amazon: the iPad mini does have stereo speakers, you cheeky gitsOkay, so Apple didn’t say anything of the sort to Amazon. Not directly, anyway. Or even indirectly. Ahem. Let’s move on.

One of the question marks hanging over the iPad mini ahead of tomorrow's release was the presence - or lack - of stereo speakers. Well, big Phil Schiller himself has purportedly confirmed that the iPad mini does indeed blast sound in stereo.

See, Apple neglected to mention the iPad mini’s stereo speakers at last week’s keynote, nor was stereo or mono specified on the Apple site's iPad mini specs page. Amazon for one just assumed it’d be mono.

Indeed, Amazon went as far as to publish an iPad mini/Amazon Kindle Fire HD comparison, citing the latter’s stereo speakers as an advantage over the former.

However, as reported by 9to5mac, some guy emailed big Phil Schiller for clarification, and Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing replied saying simply: “It is stereo”. Not even a bloomin’ full stop.

Not convinced by the email? There’s further confirmation in a tweet from The Verge’s Joshua Topolsky, who’s been putting together an iPad mini review. He screams: "People of Earth: Apple confirms iPad mini has STEREO SPEAKERS." Good stuff.

God help anyone who copies Apple then and puts stereo speakers in anything... they'll come down on them like a ton of bricks, given Apple obviously invented this technology, right?

"Amazon for one just assumed it’d be mono"
I don't think they did assume it. Engadget said when they were doing their review that Apple's own spec page said the speakers were mono.

Well the Amazon one still has dual stereo speakers..
Surely the verge guy should be able to tell if the speakers on the device he's reviewing are stereo without writing that Apple said they were?

Well it has been confirmed its stereo speakers, but as on the iPad mini the two speakers are both on the same edge and right next to each other they won't be able to produce as good stereo sound as the kindle HD where the speakers are at either end of the tablet

I'd read in a few reviews that clarified that it was stereo, that Apple's website did originally state mono, and that's where the confusion has come from. Not a big deal, but certainly no one's fault but Apple's!

You are holding it wrong. If you hold it with your nose right between the speakers you may get decent stereo separation. People with large noses might need a nose job...

Haha I had thought of writing the same thing, really the only way they can work in stereo is to insert your nose/head into the lightning port

Pondlife  Nov. 2, 2012 at 12:48

You better buy the inose lightning adaptor then

actually youve given me an idea for an adapter for the iPad mini, an on-nose adapter. Just slot it into the iPad and clip it to your nose, instantly your ipad appears to be larger than the standard iPad and you get the benefit of the stereo speakers. Plus if you cant see where you are going just fire up the camera app
