As soon as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launched last month, we looked to Apple and said: “Please sir, can we have some more? An iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, if you have them.”
It was only a matter of time, and what do you know? That October 16 rumour from a few days ago was right on the proverbial money.
Needless to say, Apple’s October 16 invite gives away absolutely nothing at all, though it’s largely accepted that we’ll meet the next generation of iPads (iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3), alongside OS X 10.10 Yosemite and possibly some delicious new iMacs.
If anything, the tagline “It’s been way too long” is even more cryptic than usual. Apple teased “Wish we could say more” prior to the iPhone 6 launch last month, but this is just weird.
In terms of time, it’s only been a year since the iPad Air launched alongside the iPad mini 2, and indeed they arrived one year on from the iPad 4 and iPad mini. So, yeah, nothing to do with a lengthier-than-usual wait.
Nor are the iPads exceptionally “long” – if we take the word literally. The iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 will likely be thinner and lighter, yes, but shorter?
Of course, Apple could be referring to something else entirely, perhaps the long-awaited Retina iMac, or the much-discussed Apple TV relaunch. The 12.9in iPad Pro is an outside contender, too. Heck, I guess it’ll have a “long” body.
In any case, we’ll get the full story one week from tomorrow. Or today, technically, since I’m putting this live at midnight. Yeah, Thursday October 16. See you then.
