Apple to ditch Samsung in favour of TSMC?

Apple to ditch Samsung in favour of TSMC?Team Cook and Team Shin have a funny old relationship. While the two are seemingly never out of court, with Apple claiming that Samsung copies its every move and Sammo insisting that the iPhone couldn’t exist without its technology, Apple is in fact one of Samsung’s biggest clients.

We heard a few months ago that Apple was looking to spread the supply chain love, and now we’re hearing that it might ditch Samsung’s CPUs.

That’s the story according to DigiTimes, crediting “industry observers”. Said observers reckon Apple will look to TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacture Company) in 2013.

However, there are concerns over how TSMC will distribute its production capacity, with iDevices demanding an estimated 200 million CPUs annually.

The expected move follows rumours that Samsung had increased Apple processor prices by a significant 20%, rumours subsequently denied by the South Koreans.

Muddying the waters slightly are reports that Samsung is contracted to provide Apple with CPUs till 2014.

An unnamed Samsung official (the one who denied the price hike) says negotiations will take place early in the new year, so I guess we’ll find out more then. Maybe.

I can't remember the last time they said anything useful. Glad I read the comment before the article (no offence, Lewis).

TSMC can barely keep up with qualcomms demand. No way it could put up with apples.
