Apple: iPad 3 launch event on March 7 Apple has finally set a date for the execution of months and months – pretty much a year's worth – of iPad 3 rumours.

The iPad 3 launch event will take place on March 7. Heck, that’s one week from today. And here was me hoping things might calm down after the insanity of Mobile World Congress…

Apple is, of course, remaining characteristically quiet, simply revealing that the iPad 3 launch event will be held– as expected – at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theatre in its native San Francisco.

Interestingly, March 7 was rumoured for the iPad 3 launch a couple of weeks ago. Turns out those “sources who have been reliable in the past” were bang on the moolah.

As for iPad 3 specs, well, the rumour mill has painted a pretty vivid picture, including a 2048 x 1536 resolution that’s said to make the display look “like printed material”. That’s twice the resolution of the original iPad and the iPad 2.

Other iPad 3 specs are thought to include a quad-core A6 processor (or maybe not), an 8MP camera on par with that of the iPhone 4S, and maybe even Siri – which of course is currently exclusive to the aforementioned 4S.

As for iPad 3 pricing, I’m hoping it’ll grab the baton from the iPad 2, while the latter is tipped to drop to semi-budget territory in order to punch the Amazon Kindle Fire in the gob.

And finally, if history has taught us anything, the iPad 3 release date will follow the week after the launch event. Boom!

Unless it's in landscape mode, but the spacing of the icons looks
like the thing's in portrait mode...
So, have they moved it? Removed it? Or is the bezel touch-sensitive?

More likely its a photoshop mess up, I would doubt that apple use actual photos for their posters etc.

Im also equally as interested to see what they announce about the Apple TV (be it a proper TV and/or an update to the box) id read that stock of the ATV2 had been running low so hoping something good will be announced, apps for example.

Think its pretty obvious this will come with Siri, out of curiosity, did Apple ever announce why the iPad 2 (with the same processor as the 4s) never got siri?

The iPhone 4S does only have a partially identical chip.
Independent tests reveal that the iPhone 4 has an Audience chip with similar functions, but the latest iPhone has the "EarSmart" technology embedded in the processor itself and this greatly boosts Siri's capabilities

Apple regularly mock-up their own products with Photoshop so, even though it is an Apple invite, it is probably still a Photoshop job. That finger reflection is definitely not real.

Maybe you're right. But the tagline, "we have something you need to see. And touch" seems to support something, well, new and touch-related.

Don't get me wrong: I don't really care

But then again: the homebutton is probably one of the if not THE most common problem area...

Maybe. I'd love for them to ditch the home button. It is the buggiest, crappiest part of any iOS device. I just can't see them showing it in the invite

I'm genuinely looking forward to the release of the iPad 3, I may well have to get myself one when they're actually for sale. If the price stays at ~£400 for a 16gb Wi-Fi model, that'll be a bargain for such a quality product.

Tablets are an area in which me and Android don't get along so well...

Analysts are calling for a new, buttonless iPad with front and rear facing cameras along with a larger screen. Will the rumors hold water?

Yes, but it's pretty much confirmed. iPad app-devs have been advised to switch to super duper high res screens. And what'd be an iDevice launch if you didn't have to update all your apps

Don't care whether they keep or ditch the button as long as they still have a reset on it, had to use it fair few times on ipod touch.

Still seems a crazy res when even most 15.6 laptops don't even have 1080p screens.

Same here, and on my old iPhone 3G. I'd guess that a very long hold (30 seconds-ish) of the power button, or holding power + volume up or down would become the hard reset combination.

There are 4.3" phones (HTC Rezound) with 720p screens nowadays...laptops just don't need such a high PPI to look nice, as they're far further from your eyes when you're using them.

N9 works okay without homebutton. Reset/reboot with long-press of powerbutton. Though - it hasn't frozen on me much, yet (partly because, ahem, I'm not using it LOL )

No, because pixels look smaller when your eyes are further away from them. Trust me it's true.

That's why a 720p TV looks just as good as a 720p smartphone despite being 42ish" compared to 4.3ish".

Some pricing 'leaks' are suggesting $579 for the bog standard iPad 3, $79 more than iPad 2. £400 really would be a bargain, doesn't look like it will happen though
