Apple sells 500 millionth iPhone, doesn’t say a word

Lewis Curdie  Mar. 26, 2014 at 16:00

Apple isn’t shy about blowing its own trumpet, whether it’s celebrating 50 billion app downloads or five years of the App Store.

Oddly, however, Apple has reportedly passed 500 million iPhone sales – and the Californians haven’t said a word.

For those of you with an iPhone or iPad or fifth gen iPod touch, you probably noticed a little ‘1’ badge pop up next to Settings last night.

Is Apple bringing back the iPhone 4? It never left

Is Apple bringing back the iPhone 4? It never left

Lewis Curdie  Feb. 6, 2014 at 14:00

Prepare to file this one under ‘Confusing’. From out of India, we’re told that Apple is bringing back the iPhone 4 in a bid to claw back market share from Samsung et al.

But a little digging around suggests the humble iPhone 4 never stopped being sold. In certain markets, at least.

iOS 7.1 features detailed ahead of consumer release

iOS 7.1 features detailed ahead of consumer release

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 19, 2013 at 12:00

iOS 7 celebrates its two-month anniversary this week, and in its relatively short existence we’ve had a handful of minor updates in the form of iOS 7.0.1, 7.0.2, 7.0.3, and most recently 7.0.4.

The next “major” version (if we can call it that) is iOS 7.1, and with the beta version now being served to developers, it’s probably safe to say it’ll hit compatible iPhones, iPads and iPod touches everywhere pretty soon.

Apple’s fiscal Q4: record iPhone sales, revenue up, profit down

Apple’s fiscal Q4: record iPhone sales, revenue up, profit down

Lewis Curdie  Oct. 29, 2013 at 12:00

Apple’s fiscal Q4 results are in for space year 2013AD, and as always, there are various ways of interpreting the figures, with a number of positives and negatives to take away.

The headline is that revenue is up year-on-year, while profit is down against the year-ago period. Say what?

Apple to roll out iPhone trade-in scheme to UK stores

A couple of months ago, Apple launched its iPhone “Reuse and Recycling Program” in US stores, but the option is still absent for consumers in the UK – and indeed throughout wider Europe.

Rumour has it us Europeans might soon be able to take our old iPhones to ye olde Apple shoppe, with the UK right at the front of the queue.

Angry Birds Star Wars II iOS review

There’s no getting past it; the latest three Star Wars films are terrible. Ok, Episode III is fine, but the other two are utter gash. Indeed, I was reading about "Star Wars Machete Order" the other day, in which some guy proposes watching IV, V, II, III then VI, and missing Episode I entirely. Interesting.

Anyway! My rant is slightly on topic. What we have here is a game based on the first three episodes of the franchise, namely Angry Birds Star Wars II. Thankfully, it’s far more enjoyable than the source material.

Infinity Blade III touches down, fully optimised for your 64-bit A7 processor

It’s been a hell of a week for games. GTA V finally arrived after a five-year wait, while smartphones and tablets have, er, Angry Birds: Star Wars 2 (App Store, Google Play; I’ll get to that in words tomorrow, hopefully).

There’s more good news for iDevice owners with the arrival of Infinity Blade III (sah-weet), and indeed iPhone 5S owners will get the best from it with their 64-bit A7 processors. Lovely.

iOS 7: what’s new?

I promised to scribble my first impressions of iOS 7 earlier this morning, and here I am delivering on said promise with a thousand-word monstrosity of an essay. #hero

Jan has already given the game away by insisting that you install iOS 7 now (“do it!!!” he says, in his best German supervillain accent), and I have to concur: it’s pretty great like.

iOS 7 release date for existing iDevices: September 18

I’ve already scribbled about the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S tonight, which just leaves the operating system side of things, namely controversially pastel-heavy iOS 7.

As well as announcing two new iPhones tonight, Apple found the time to talk iOS 7 features. Well, for a little bit, at least.
