iPhone 6’s A8 processor: dual-core but super-fast?

iPhone 6’s A8 processor: dual-core but super-fast?

Lewis Curdie  5 days ago

To Apple’s credit, it’s never really been one to join in the smartphone spec race. The iPhone’s camera, for example, has technically been 8MP since 2011’s iPhone 4S, with the Californians opting to make the technology better (shock horror) rather than half-heartedly upping the megapixel count.

Similarly, we’re told that the inevitable Apple A8 processor powering the iPhone 6 will be dual-core, same as the A7, A6 and even A5 before it, but with significantly better performance.

Apple’s Q2 2014: $10.2 billion profit on $45.6 billion in revenue

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 24 at 14:00

Wall Street is eating humble pie for breakfast this morning, as Apple posted better-than-expected results for its financial Q2 2014 (that’s Q1 2014 to you and me).

Revenue was up a fair bit from the year-ago figure, outperforming estimates from Wall Street – and even Apple’s own expectations.

Apple sells 500 millionth iPhone, doesn’t say a word

Apple isn’t shy about blowing its own trumpet, whether it’s celebrating 50 billion app downloads or five years of the App Store.

Oddly, however, Apple has reportedly passed 500 million iPhone sales – and the Californians haven’t said a word.

iPhone 6 specs: just an 8MP camera?

The smartphone camera wars are really heating up, with the Sony Xperia Z2 coming in at 20.7MP, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom reportedly brewing a 20MP snapper, and the Nokia Lumia 1020 sitting at 41MP.

As such, the iPhone 6 will inevitably up its game, taking the megapixel count to a whole new level, right? Uhm…

Apple CarPlay: in-car system loves Lightning-gen iPhones

If you’d told us Apple would launch new hardware in Q1 2014, our money would’ve been on a new iPad (perhaps the gargantuan iPad Pro), with the iWatch an admittedly unlikely outside bet.

But nope, here we’re looking to motor vehicles, and hearing that Apple CarPlay is a "smarter, safer and more fun" option for playing with your iPhone while, y’know, driving your wheeled metallic death box.

Two separate iPhone 6 launches: summer and autumn?

Time was, you’d see the new iPhone launch in summer at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), though more recently we’ve come to expect the next-generation iPhone announcement in fall (or “autumn”, if you prefer).

The latest iPhone 6 rumour proposes not just two separate iPhone 6 models, but two separate launch events in two different seasons. What the…?

iOS 7.1 features detailed ahead of consumer release

iOS 7.1 features detailed ahead of consumer release

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 19, 2013 at 12:00

iOS 7 celebrates its two-month anniversary this week, and in its relatively short existence we’ve had a handful of minor updates in the form of iOS 7.0.1, 7.0.2, 7.0.3, and most recently 7.0.4.

The next “major” version (if we can call it that) is iOS 7.1, and with the beta version now being served to developers, it’s probably safe to say it’ll hit compatible iPhones, iPads and iPod touches everywhere pretty soon.

Apple’s fiscal Q4: record iPhone sales, revenue up, profit down

Lewis Curdie  Oct. 29, 2013 at 12:00

Apple’s fiscal Q4 results are in for space year 2013AD, and as always, there are various ways of interpreting the figures, with a number of positives and negatives to take away.
