iPhone 5S: familiar on the outside, significant overhaul inside

Lewis Curdie  5 days ago

While we’d love to see a spanking new iPhone 6 later this year, history tells us it’ll more likely be an iPhone 5S, essentially an iPhone 5 with a few tweaks under the hood.

However, some leaked pics suggest it won’t just be a case of a slightly faster processor and enhanced camera.

Samsung Galaxy S4 ad: the next big thing is back

Samsung Galaxy S4 ad: the next big thing is back

Martin James  May. 4 at 12:30

We all remember the Galaxy S III “next big thing is here” ads. And that's the point: love 'em, hate 'em, you remember them.

Well the next big thing is back, and now it's celebrating Samsung's graduation to the Galaxy S4 by using “graduation” as the theme for its latest iPhone-ridiculing advert.

DisplayMate: Samsung Galaxy S4 display trumps S3, ties iPhone 5

Man, it’s been too long since we heard from Dr. Raymond Soneira, owner of DisplayMate Technologies. Last we wrote, he was saying that 1080p smartphone displays were kinda pointless.

Now he’s put the Samsung Galaxy S4’s display under the microscope (literally, by the sounds of it), concluding – in layman’s terms – that it’s pretty freakin’ good.

Smartphone flagship snapshot – April 2013

Try saying “Smartphone flagship snapshot” three times fast. It’s quite possibly the best game I’ve played all year (no offense, Little Inferno et al).

I have to give credit to unofficialmobotpollguy for this feature. After asking Which smartphone flagship would you choose? yesterday I got to wondering, and figured it might be interesting to take a snapshot of the current flagships, sort of like a smartphone time capsule or something.

DigiTimes: Samsung grabs 30% of Q1 2013 smartphone market as shipments soar

We’re at that stage in Q2 when we’re in a position to look over Q1 figures, with the latest batch coming courtesy of DRAMeXchange by way of everyone’s favourite eastern rumourmonger, DigiTimes.

The key takeaway is that Samsung is still top dog (unsurprisingly), while Apple has seemingly stalled as storm clouds gather over Cupertino (tad melodramatic, I know).

After July for iPhone 5S release? Budget iPhone, iPad mini 2 launches delayed also

After July for iPhone 5S release? Budget iPhone, iPad mini 2 launches delayed also

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 18 at 14:00

Less than a week ago, we heard that Apple was supposedly facing production problems with the iPhone 5S, budget iPhone and iPad mini 2, not to mention falling behind with iOS 7.

Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek seconds those various notions after a trip out east, and throws in some suitably bleak quotes. Heck, he even starts rambling on about the iPhone 6.

iPhone 5S specs to include 12MP rear camera with enhanced low light mode

iPhone 5S specs to include 12MP rear camera with enhanced low light mode

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 16 at 16:00

It’s widely accepted that the next iPhone will be the iPhone 5S (as opposed to an all-new iPhone 6), and – as such – tradition dictates that it’ll have a speedier processor and fancier camera.

That’s what we’re hearing again today; that the iPhone 5S will have a radically enhanced camera, specifically weighing in with 12MP.

How I (almost) killed my iPhone

How I (almost) killed my iPhone

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 10 at 13:00

There’s nothing I enjoy more than a good tale of man vs. technology. One of my friends recently bought some turbo RAM for his PC only to discover that it was incompatible with the BIOS thrusters, and in replacing the BIOS thrusters killed the motherswitch. Or something.

It was my turn last night, and at one point I genuinely thought I might’ve killed my iPhone to death.

Goldman Sachs worried about Apple’s future, reduces outlook

Goldman Sachs worried about Apple’s future, reduces outlook

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 4 at 16:00

Apple continues to punt a fairly ridiculous volume of iPhones and iPads, but it’s the future that has analysts worried, with the loss of Steve Jobs, increasingly stiff competition from the likes of Samsung, and shrinking margins and what not.

Jumping on the doom and gloom bandwagon, Goldman Sachs is the latest to voice its concerns in a tear-stained note to investors.

iOS 7 behind schedule, but iPhone 5S tipped for summer launch (again)

iOS 7 behind schedule, but iPhone 5S tipped for summer launch (again)

Lewis Curdie  Apr. 3 at 12:00

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I make it a whole 15 days since we last talked iPhone 5S rumours, specifically when some lady said Apple’s next phone would rock an unspecified “killer feature”. If you say so, lady.

As such, the iPhone 5S rumour mill has been working overtime, yielding the suggestion that iOS 7 is running behind, while the iPhone 5S is again tipped to launch in summer.
