Apple iPhone 5

The sheer terror that comes with owning a new phone

The sheer terror that comes with owning a new phone

Ardent followers of our hallowed pages will know that I recently took the giant step of ditching my trusty HTC Desire HD and purr-chasing an iPhone 5. A 64GB iPhone 5, to be specific.

Yes, that means I parted with a frankly outrageous £700, and as such, the past week has been nothing less than terrifying.

EE confirms its LTE lineup, but still nothing on pricing and 4G availability

EE confirms its LTE lineup, but still nothing on pricing and 4G availability

Martin James  Oct. 3, 2012 at 10:00

For years now we've had to endure the frustration of seeing 4G find its feet in other markets (most notably the US), while all the while our own networks remain firmly stuck in 3G-land.

That's finally about to change thanks to the emergence of EE's 4G LTE service, and the Orange/T-Mobile mashup today officially announced its initial salvo of 4G handsets.

App reviews coming soon

App reviews coming soon

We’ve a combined feature slash deal slash app review preview type thing right here. Is there no end to my talents? Ahem.

Recent app reviews have been fairly underwhelming, with the notable exception of N.O.V.A. 3. Well, I’ve gone and grabbed a bunch of decidedly promising stuff from the App Store, and I’m hoping we might see some more 5-star gaming.

Apple continues to play nice, introduces Maps section in App Store

Apple CEO Tim Cook stunned the world on Friday, with an open letter to customers apologising for "falling short" on the company’s in-house Maps app.

Better still, they’ve only gone and added a bloomin’ Maps section to the App Store, offering alternative mapping solutions to iOS 6's Apple Maps. What the...?

Tim Cook: sorry, we ‘fell short’ with Apple Maps

Tim Cook: sorry, we ‘fell short’ with Apple Maps

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 28, 2012 at 19:00

Apple isn’t usually one to show any signs of weakness or remorse, preferring instead to brush off criticism with the likes of aluminium gets scratched, deal with it.

It comes as somewhat of a surprise then to hear Tim Cook has conceded that Apple Maps, launched last week with iOS 6, isn’t quite up to the task.

Schmidt to Apple: you should’ve kept Google Maps

Schmidt to Apple: you should’ve kept Google Maps

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 26, 2012 at 14:00

One of the 200+ new features – actually one of the main attractions – in iOS 6 is Apple Maps, which replaces Google Maps after years of loyal service. Alas, despite the fancy 3D flyover stuff, it’s arguably a bit of a downgrade, if anything.

Now, one week after the launch of iOS 6, Google Chairman and former presidential advisor, Eric Schmidt, suggests Apple might’ve made a wee mistake in ditching Google Maps. Oops.

Motorola takes a potshot at iOS Maps

Motorola takes a potshot at iOS Maps

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 24, 2012 at 19:00

Unless you’ve been living in cryostasis for the past week, you’ll know that Apple’s Maps app is somewhat, er, lacking in a few areas. Not the end of the world, of course, but important enough to make news headlines, apparently.

Anyway! Google-owned Motorola has taken a cheeky potshot at Apple, with a picture of the Google Maps-rockin’ Motorola Razr M side by side with the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 casing super-susceptible to scratches?

iPhone 5 casing super-susceptible to scratches?

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 24, 2012 at 11:00

It’s tradition for the release of any new iDevice to be followed by frenzied reporting of faults, such as yellow hues and overheating. True or not, the claims are always blown out of all proportion.

Now that the iPhone 5 has been released, we’re hearing that the casing - particularly the anodised aluminium rear - is susceptible to scratches. Good lord, no!

iPhone 5: has Apple finally peaked?

iPhone 5: has Apple finally peaked?

Martin James  Sep. 23, 2012 at 15:00

Here's an eyebrow-raiser for you: Apple's share price today is nearly 100 times higher than it was 10 years ago. And there's no question that the biggest catalyst powering that upward spiral has been the iPhone.

But no growth can continue forever (though Apple seems determined to disprove that), and a growing band of analysts is now saying the newly launched iPhone 5 represents the high-water mark in Apple's dizzying ascent.

Samsung suing Apple over iPhone 5 LTE

Samsung suing Apple over iPhone 5 LTE

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 21, 2012 at 14:00

It was rumoured at the end of August, weeks before the device even launched, and now we have apparent confirmation.

Samsung, recently ordered to pay Apple over $1 billion in damages (though Apple wants three times that), will sue its Californian friend over the iPhone 5’s LTE technology.
