Motorola takes a potshot at iOS Maps

Motorola takes a potshot at iOS Maps

Unless you’ve been living in cryostasis for the past week, you’ll know that Apple’s Maps app is somewhat, er, lacking in a few areas. Not the end of the world, of course, but important enough to make news headlines, apparently.

Anyway! Google-owned Motorola has taken a cheeky potshot at Apple, with a picture of the Google Maps-rockin’ Motorola Razr M side by side with the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 casing super-susceptible to scratches?

iPhone 5 casing super-susceptible to scratches?

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 24, 2012 at 11:00

It’s tradition for the release of any new iDevice to be followed by frenzied reporting of faults, such as yellow hues and overheating. True or not, the claims are always blown out of all proportion.

Now that the iPhone 5 has been released, we’re hearing that the casing - particularly the anodised aluminium rear - is susceptible to scratches. Good lord, no!

iPhone 5: has Apple finally peaked?

iPhone 5: has Apple finally peaked?

Martin James  Sep. 23, 2012 at 15:00

Here's an eyebrow-raiser for you: Apple's share price today is nearly 100 times higher than it was 10 years ago. And there's no question that the biggest catalyst powering that upward spiral has been the iPhone.

But no growth can continue forever (though Apple seems determined to disprove that), and a growing band of analysts is now saying the newly launched iPhone 5 represents the high-water mark in Apple's dizzying ascent.

Samsung suing Apple over iPhone 5 LTE

Samsung suing Apple over iPhone 5 LTE

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 21, 2012 at 14:00

It was rumoured at the end of August, weeks before the device even launched, and now we have apparent confirmation.

Samsung, recently ordered to pay Apple over $1 billion in damages (though Apple wants three times that), will sue its Californian friend over the iPhone 5’s LTE technology.

Apple Maps: a bit rubbish?

Apple Maps: a bit rubbish?

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 21, 2012 at 13:00

It’s probably fair to say there’s not a great deal worth getting excited about in iOS 6, which rolled out earlier in the week ahead of today’s iPhone 5 release.

The headline feature is Apple Maps, which replaces the long-used Google Maps app. However, early reports (and personal experience) suggest Apple has a bit of work to do to bring its Maps app up to scratch.

iPhone 5 pre-order shipping wait grows: Apple Store now saying 3-4 weeks

iPhone 5 pre-order shipping wait grows: Apple Store now saying 3-4 weeks

Martin James  Sep. 19, 2012 at 19:00

It happened yesterday for iPhone 5 junkies in the US, and today it's the UK's turn: the online Apple Store is now listing a 3-4 week shipping delay for customers looking to buy one online SIM-free.

That's up from the 2-3 week wait Apple was quoting when we had a look this morning, and means even if you act now it may be into the second half of October before your shiny new iDevice arrives in the post.

Phil Schiller: no plans for an official iPhone 5 dock

Phil Schiller: no plans for an official iPhone 5 dock

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 19, 2012 at 16:00

Apple’s senior VP of marketing, Phil Schiller, did a pretty sweet job talking up the iPhone 5 at last week’s keynote. Said keynote detailed the iPhone 5’s new Lightning connector, however there was no word of an official dock to go with it.

Some dude reached out to Schiller via email, and Phil says – in a nutshell – Apple doesn’t have any plans for an iPhone 5 dock accessory.

I've certainly made my own fair share of blunders in my time – it goes with the territory when you're tasked with churning out content rain, shine and pretty much everything in between.

But I'd like to think I'll never quite match the level of a Fox News reporter's straight faced claim that the new Apple iPhone 5 boasts a laser keyboard and can display holographic images.

Yeah, I bought an iPhone 5

Lewis Curdie  Sep. 17, 2012 at 13:00

Yeah, I bought an iPhone 5

Just to clarify: that headline isn’t me saying: “Yes! I’ve pre-ordered my iPhone 5 and I can’t WAIT to get my hands on it!” It’s more a case of: “Uh oh, I just caved in and pre-ordered my iPhone 5, and now I can’t afford the rent.” Anyone have a spare room?

In an extension of Thinking out loud: iPhone 5 reaction, I will now attempt to convince you – and more importantly me – that I’ve done the right thing.

First iPhone 5 benchmarks in: doubles iPad 3's score

Yeah, you beat us to it, you maniacs. But, in our defense, I spent the entire weekend bathing in a barrel of Jack Daniel's, while Martin did important stuff like looking after kids and that. Two very valid excuses. Ahem.

Anyway! The iPhone 5’s A6 processor has been benchmarked, and it’s good news for speed junkies.
