More iPhone 5 specs: thin as heck, five rows of apps

More iPhone 5 specs: thin as heck, five rows of apps

“What’s the deal with the iPhone 5?” You wouldn’t believe how many people ask me that question. I recently summed up the story so far in iPhone 5 rumours, and now we have a couple more specs to throw in.

We have two entirely unrelated iPhone 5 spec leaks here: one concerning the thickness (or should I say “thinness”), t’other dealing with the resolution and icon layout.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2: specs and rumours

Samsung Galaxy Note 2: specs and rumours

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 8, 2012 at 13:00

I was at a gathering recently, and when one of the guys whipped out his Samsung Galaxy Note (not a euphemism), the surrounding people laughed. Not necessarily a mocking laugh; more an expression of surprise at the size of his gargantuan phone (again: not a euphemism).

However, despite blurring the boundary between smartphone and tablet (and resultantly popularising the term “phablet”) with its 5.3in display, the Samsung Galaxy Note has proved incredibly popular, and the South Korean manufacturer is on the verge of announcing an even bigger successor.

The bubble isn't bursting but Apple won't sell 250 million iPhone 5s

Whatever your thoughts are on the Apple v Samsung legal slugfest, it's giving us a rare look at the inner workings of two of the most successful companies on the planet as they force each other to shed light on how they go about doing what they do.

The past few days have been particularly interesting, with some seriously heavy hitters on the Apple side weighing into proceedings as the case unfolds in the San Jose courts.

iOS 6 loses YouTube, Apple Rickrolls

iOS 6 loses YouTube, Apple Rickrolls

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 7, 2012 at 12:00

You all remember the ancient art of Rickrolling, right? The digital bait-and-switch essentially saw users tricked into watching the video for Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”.

You’ll never guess who’s caught on just as we thought Rickrolling had been consigned to the history eBooks. Yep, only bloomin’ Apple.

Sharp in trouble, Foxconn stroking its chin

Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer Sharp is in a spot of bother, having recently announced quarterly losses of ¥138.4 billion (£1.1 billion).

Resultantly, the iPhone display provider (and occasional Android dabbler)’s stock price fell to its lowest point in 38 years. Cripes.

Sir Jonathan Ive: we almost ditched the iPhone

Sir Jonathan Ive: we almost ditched the iPhone

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 1, 2012 at 16:00

You all know Sir Jonathan Ive, right? He’s the British brain behind Apple’s brawn, and is currently senior VP of industrial design. Story goes: he pretty much invented the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Sir Jony has been speaking in London (possibly something vaguely related to – you guessed it – the Olympics), and he reveals that Apple very nearly scrapped the iPhone.

New iPhone 5 pics: the best ones yet?

New iPhone 5 pics: the best ones yet?

Martin James  Jul. 30, 2012 at 10:30

The details are still hazy, but we know there's a new iPhone coming, probably called the iPhone 5, and we're fairly sure Apple's new baby is in early or full production as we speak.

So while iPhone rumours have been coming on so strong for so long that the very concept stirs in us no more than a disinterested half-eyebrow-raise at this point, new pics emerging at this point admittedly have a fair chance of being The Real Thing. And even if not, the iPhone Rumour Fiends will gobble it all up anyway, so let's get into it.

All smiles for Samsung as Galaxy S III leads the charge to .9bn in profits

First comes Apple's crazy cash bonanza, now it's Samsung's turn. Yup, Samwise has reported its latest quarterly earnings figures, and while $5.9bn profits can't quite match Apple's $8.8bn, it's still far from what anyone would term “bad news”.

Especially when (unlike Apple) Samsung's performance was almost entirely seen as good news by analysts – an important point in a business that's as much about perception as anything else.
