Apple sends out iPhone 5 event invite

Apple sends out iPhone 5 event inviteWell, well, well. Following what has felt like endless months of speculation, Apple has finally announced the date for its iPhone 5 unveiling.

Turns out those recent rumours were right on the money, as the world's media will descend on Apple's home turf of Cupertino on Tuesday, October 4.

Other than that, the Californians are remaining characteristically quiet, but hell - you wouldn't expect anything else, would you? Oh, we've got a start time of 10am PST actually. That's 6pm our time. I think.

We'll inevitably have more on this tomorrow as the iPhone 5 story develops. Er, assuming there's actually anything worth saying.

In the meantime, I'll leave you with an utterly useless fact, entirely unrelated to the iPhone 5. Did you know Alicia Silverstone was born on October 4? Me neither. Whatever happened to her? She was kinda cute. Answers on a postcard. Or a comment, that'd probably be easier.

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 19:51

or go see her broadway play...

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 19:51

JULIAS HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT. on the 5th the rumours will start for the iphone 5/6 or 4gs ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 20:40

The rumours will never end, Julius. Put it this way, iPad 3 rumours were circulating the web, before the iPad 2 was released. Samsung Galaxy S3 rumours were around, before the Galaxy S2 was's the nature of the ever developing beast, that is technology.

Apple launches always have the side-effect of making some other phones drop in price, as well as giving manufacturers a kick up the bum to make better phones. Bring it on!

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 21:12

Talking of making other manufacturers making better phones; that Nexus Prime looks sweeeeeeeeet :D. Though I seriously doubt the original rumours of it being quad core will hold any truth :'(

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 21:20

yep the nexus prime does look good... but as always i will believe it when i get to see it in the flesh ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 21:31

It'll be out with ICS, Gingerbread, FroYo and Honeycomb (not a nexus I know), had Google endorsed launch devices, the Nexus Prime will come, be patient my friend :)

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 21:54

it will come... but will it be worth the wait ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:04

It'll be a good phone, but no better than an ICS AOSP ROM on an SGS2...quad core processors haven't been released yet so it'll either have an OMAP or the Exynos...I'll wait for the inevitable SGS2 ICS update, whether that's an XDA job or a leaked Samfirmware file.

blizzard7  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:10

OMAP's quads aren't due for mass-production until Summer 2012, with availability in Autumn. You'll be waiting a long time for an OMAP quad-core.

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:17

Eugh, I prefer the Exynos anyway, speed is everything, and that Mali 400 is an absolute monster, nothing seems able to come close at the moment. Sammy reckon first half of 2012 for the SGS3 which undoubtedly will be quad core. I guess HTC will come out with a qualcomm powered quad core around the same time as well. There's also the nVidia Kal El processor, which I guess LG will use, along with most of the tablets, if the current tablet processor choice is anything to go by.

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:28

utter rubbish boys a quad core phone already exists called the meizu MX.

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:31

Powered by?

I didn't know you felt so strongly about Jan, missing him ;)?

blizzard7  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:31

That's not going to be a standard OMAP though.

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:36

So what's it actually powered by then? I doubt it's anything great, as none of the big boys have released quad-core chips...yet. Is it basically two dual-cores, strapped together, or something?

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:40

a Cortex-A9 quad-core processor

and no matty... just getting seriously pi$$ed by this mod bug.

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:43

Is that all the detail that's given? No manufacturer mentioned? What about, GPU?

The mod bug is annoying as hell, I rarely get it any more. You probably get it, because you're a new-ish member who posts a lot...I only get it with photo posts sometimes, nowadays.

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:49

no idea on manufacturer or gpu ;) just know its 1ghz.

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:51

More details on something far less dodgy looking, and far more interesting :D!!!

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 22:55

i hope it becomes a branded tablet. i.e. orange / three / vodafone for example..

zte has a problem with putting a premium on their devices...

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 23:01

Agree, have you seen the price difference between the Monte Carlo and it's ZTE branded counterpart?!

hard123  Sep. 27, 2011 at 23:12

God you guys are slow.

Thought you specialised in mobile phone news, not history? :p

Treab  Sep. 27, 2011 at 23:18

140 quid from orange

225 from amazon...

i dont get it why is it soo high.

matt101101 / MOD  Sep. 27, 2011 at 23:31

Pay 85 quid more to have an orange logo thanks, ZTE. Though it's the same story with HTC, they've started charging far higher prices since they stopped making phones for networks, and began standing on their own two feet, if you will.
