Apple testing iPhablets ‘as large as six inches’

Apple testing iPhablets ‘as large as six inches’As I pointed out before, somewhere, at some point, with the iPhone 5 measuring 4in diagonally and the iPad mini coming in at 7.9in, that leaves a perfect space in the middle (6in or thereabouts) for the inevitable Apple phablet.

That’s pretty much the story from some dude who scribbles for The Wall Street Journal, with Apple said to be testing iPhablets up to six inches in size.

Apple CEO Tim Cook dismissed the notion of an iPhablet as recently as May this year, saying that such large-screened devices come with too many “trade-offs”.

However, Cook concluded: “We haven’t so far; that doesn’t shut off the future.” Yeah, we all know it’s coming, big man. It’s just a matter of time.

Of course, that time almost certainly won’t be next week, when the iPhone 5S launches, possibly alongside the budget iPhone 5C.

But hold onto your hats... “BREAKING” news! The Wall Street Journal’s Ian Sherr tweets: “Apple testing iPhone screens as large as six inches, sources say. Screen size not expected for new devices this month. Story soon.”

Yeah, that doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, Sherr.

And heck, as some guy called Jordan W Huxely rightly replies: “Apple tests a lot of products ... the majority never see the light of day ... only time to be excited is when the [sic] announce it!”

Hahahahaha

Also: Microsoft are testing instant coffe in the Nokia canteen.
Next week: will BIC release a pink version of the Crystal Classic?

Of course, they are trying dozens of screens at any given time.

Comments like that one just wind me up. Added nothing to the discussion, had nothing to do with the article in discussion and is, at best, a poor attempt at humour from somebody who really doesn't understand the irony of their comment about fan boys.

'The iPhone is rubbish because it doesn't have a SD or removable battery'
'But the phone regarded by critics as the best android device currently available doesn't have them either'.
'But iPhones are for sheep and fanboys'

Rinse and repeat.

AhmadCentral  Sep. 8, 2013 at 21:40

I don't even.....

Hahaha
Very true. Add glass backs LOL

And, ooh... funny how Android fans don't mind Schmidt's longterm commitment to the Bilderberg group, his love for Kissinger, Google's collaboration with the NSA, or Google stealing WiFi password with their Streetview cars, or Google overriding do-not-track etc etc etc etc etc

But they wouldn't buy iOS, because Apple once gathered location data (to build maps...).

As if there was a single ethical corporation.

Have to agree with your last line Jan.

However there are some good companies who i do support for what they do. Most are small companies, but some are also big companies.

True, but none of them are called googlemicrosoftsamsungapplehtcetcetera :p

There are good companies. At least for a while. Until they aren't.
And I'm not suggesting one cannot enjoy and/or put to good use the products of a bad company. I'm also not suggesting all Google staff are evil etc etc...
Just to be clear.
We all have sand and fingers to draw lines with...

6" iPhone? Not for me but im all for individual choice so fine for Apple to release this, Juuuuust hope it doesnt then result in the stance that seemingly every other manufacturer has moved towards which is then anything under 5-6" is automatically mid-range (or worse)

Some of us like having "cutting edge" technology in phones that are small thank you very much

Totally agree. I was over my friend's the other day, he has a Note 2 and his wife has a SG4 and he couldn't understand how I got on with a 4" screen.
I said I like to do the 4 corner test by holding it in one hand and reaching each corner with my thumb. The iPhone 5 is perfect for this for me.
He said he could do it with his Note and then held it in one hand and touched each corner with the other. I asked if he could do it with one hand and he said he couldnt so that's how he uses it.
If you have to change the way you would instinctively use something then maybe it's not right for you.

JanSt / MOD  Sep. 9, 2013 at 13:04

Agree. iPhone 5 or my Nokia N9 - plus some 4.3-inchers suit me exactly for this reason. Use them with one hand.
That may be unimportant to many many people but I do not care.
And if Apple become the only company to make a small-ish device with highend feature then call me an iFan.

Yup, same, I currently can do all tasks on my iphone with just one hand holding the phone, I dont need to use my other hand and personally dont see the benefit of needing to use my other hand.

Im happy to sacrafice a slightly larger screen for one which I can use and is easier to carry around with me, but its a shame that outside of iOS that would mean I have to sacrafice having top specs, like you say Jan its more a case of having iOS becuase other manufacturers are dropping the ball here in all the "largest is best" hype
