Smartphone and tablet gaming is big business, and as technology evolves we’re starting to see more and more ambitious games, such as Grand Theft Auto III and Shadowgun.
There’s no escaping the fact that touchscreen controls aren’t always ideal, but Apple is said to be working on a proper controller for its iOS games. Très intéressant.
The news comes via Anandtech’s iPad review. One of the chaps writes: “I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen.
“As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.”
There are plenty of games where touchscreen controls work just fine. In fact, in some games (Plants vs Zombies springs to mind), touchscreen controls are arguably the most effective.
On the other hand, it’s hard to play the likes of N.O.V.A. without craving a controller or a keyboard and mouse. The aforementioned GTA III is also particularly clunky.
I dunno. If we’re gonna start going down the controller route, why not just play a proper console? Part of the appeal of smartphone/tablet gaming is being able to lie on the couch unrestrained. Am I right?
