Apple working on iOS gaming controller

Apple working on iOS gaming controllerSmartphone and tablet gaming is big business, and as technology evolves we’re starting to see more and more ambitious games, such as Grand Theft Auto III and Shadowgun.

There’s no escaping the fact that touchscreen controls aren’t always ideal, but Apple is said to be working on a proper controller for its iOS games. Très intéressant.

The news comes via Anandtech’s iPad review. One of the chaps writes: “I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen.

“As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.”

There are plenty of games where touchscreen controls work just fine. In fact, in some games (Plants vs Zombies springs to mind), touchscreen controls are arguably the most effective.

On the other hand, it’s hard to play the likes of N.O.V.A. without craving a controller or a keyboard and mouse. The aforementioned GTA III is also particularly clunky.

I dunno. If we’re gonna start going down the controller route, why not just play a proper console? Part of the appeal of smartphone/tablet gaming is being able to lie on the couch unrestrained. Am I right?

They want it replace proper consoles though, and thence charge console prices for some games no doubt.
Agree that sometimes you might want to use on the couch how you say but the option to do more intensive gaming on it will be desirous to some.

Lewis, by your logic bt keyboards are useless, too. Etc etc... You said you needed an iPad for work? To test games? There. Some need them for work. To work. They need a real keyboard now and again. And plenty of games would profit from a controler, and I have never seen your couch, but why won't it live in harmony with a controller?

:p

I think once you are using a controller you can't really be holding the ipad too so harder to laze on coach playing games. Surely though connected up to a nice tv and with the controller it could be coach comfortable. (although you'd lose resolution ;) )

What Pondlife said :p

But then back to my original point: once you start moving into console territory ("connected up to a nice tv and with the controller") why wouldn't you just play a proper games-dedicated console? Mind you, I'm spouting on the assumption that everyone has a PS3, Xbox 360, iPad...

Actually, GTA III looks a whole lot better on iOS than it does on the PS2 :p

Not to mention: Look at the Appstore for Macs ;) Dontcha think that controller may just be for Macs? And with Mounntain Lion rumoured to become more iOS-ish who knows...

Games on ios cost much less than console if that stays the same then it's good reason to take that option. <<<<<====== THAT

waiiiiiiiiit

so if this rumour is true, apple want people to use a controller, a device used with both hands, to play games on a tablet, a device used with both hands.

i'm seeing a slight problem here.

Nice sketch, think we may have touched on more likely plans above though.
