Huawei chairman Richard Yu teased “shocking products” a few weeks ago, and while the Ascend Mate 7 will likely make a decent splash at IFA 2014 next week, “shocking” is maybe a bit of a stretch.
This guy, however, this guy is a little more interesting. I speak of the Huawei Ascend P7 with sapphire crystal display, which might just land before the iPhone 6.
We expect the Huawei Ascend P7 with sapphire crystal to be largely the same phone as the base model, just a little more rugged, and perhaps more expensive as a result.
That being the case, specs will include a 5in 1080p display, 13MP rear camera, 8MP selfie cam, and KitKat Android 4.4 with a slather of Huawei’s Emotion UI on top.
The iPhone 6 is – or was – widely rumoured to come with a sapphire crystal display, but it’s supposedly proving problematic, and might be saved for particular size/storage variants – if it makes an appearance at all.
The advantage for Huawei is that the sapphire crystal Ascend P7 will be a relatively low-volume phone, certainly nowhere near the predicted iPhone 6 volume, so the Chinese manufacturer can commit to the nascent technology with little problem.
Sapphire crystal is supposedly more durable than the current crop of smartphone displays, though many – including Gorilla – remain unconvinced.
