Asus Japan talks Google Nexus 7 docking station

Asus Japan talks Google Nexus 7 docking stationUsers of the Asus-built Google Nexus 7 have been fairly neglected as far as official accessories go, with the Accessories tab on Google Play offering only a Nexus 7 cover and, er, additional charger.

But there are signs, once again, that an official Google Nexus 7 docking station might be on the way.

The Google Nexus 7 docking station image you see before you recently popped up on the official Asus Japan website, and while it’s actually been kicking around since July, AJ reckons “early December” is looking good for release.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the landscape-only Google Nexus 7 docking station is worth getting too excited about.

Predictably, the Google Nexus 7 docking station has microUSB for charging and a 3.5mm audio port, but that appears to be it. Certainly no sign of HDMI-out.

Asus Japan reckons the Google Nexus 7 docking station will set you back 3,480 Japanese Yen, which equates to roughly £26, though there’s no word on an official release for us big gaijins in the west. Bothered?

Missed opportunity, but they are determined not to give it video out it seems.

It works off a 4 contact pogo pin system, how on earth would it carry video?

About time on this thing though, it was leaked back in July, just ridiculous it's taken this long for a dock to come out using the inbuilt pogo pins.

such a shame, a 7" HDMI tablet dock seems like such a good idea but im not aware of any tablets that have it (other than the iPad mini with a dock/HDMI adapter)

Come on manufacturers, docks are essential for tablets

essential seems a bit strong..

How many pins does usb have again? Isn't that four?

I'll probably get it because it's just a handy stand for my tablet while I'm at my desktop (depending on the price).
I don't really get why folks were expecting HDMI out, the Nexus 7 doesn't have it, a dock can't magically add it the way they add stuff like Ethernet adapters because they just work as USB devices. The dock connector on the tablet only has a few pins, it's essentially a USB connection.

I don't think anyone was expecting hdmi out, just hoping. mhl on numerous devices shows that you can do it from usb...

barrybarryk  Dec. 4, 2012 at 21:50

but the nexus 7 doesn't support MHL, a dock can't add it if the original port doesn't support it. They're just pass through devices

Well it didn't on usb, wasn't much progress last I saw on working out the pin outputs from pogo

essential seems a bit strong..

Only, maybe a ittle strong (although to me it is essential),, it just seems that manufacturers dont seem to realise that having a charging dock is really useful (rather than having to faff with a cable to charge) and better is one with HDMI out for easy connection to a TV.
