Windows 10 release date: ‘summer’, Xiaomi to assist with testing meantime

Windows 10 is still being tweaked at the moment, but we’ve been told – unofficially – to brace for the first Windows 10 devices in or around August.

Microsoft’s EVP of Operating Systems, Terry Myerson, chimes loosely with that notion, telling us to pencil the official Windows 10 release date in as “summer”, but arguably more interesting is the news that Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi will assist with Windows 10 testing. Zuh?

New Nintendo games on iOS and Android are officially go!

Lewis Curdie  Mar. 18, 2015 at 14:00

Nintendo has repeatedly said it has no interest whatsoever in quick-fix mobile gaming, even as the industry continues to boom, and developers like Sega rake in gargantuan bundles of cash. Until now, that is!

In partnership with DeNA Co. Ltd, Nintendo has fired out a press release confirming it’s getting involved in mobile gaming. Ooh baby.

Become James Bond with this N64 Goldeneye-style Android Wear watchface

Lewis Curdie  Mar. 17, 2015 at 16:30

The older readers among you will no doubt fondly recall Goldeneye on the N64 as one of the best games of all time, and one of the first multiplayer first-person shooters (all four of you huddled round the same TV, of course).

If you’ve been questioning the merits of smartwatches until now, question no longer: you can emulate the Goldeneye pause screen with this free Android Wear Secret Agent Watchface. Yeah, it doesn’t mention James Bond or Goldeneye or the N64 specifically, but we all know what’s going on here.

HTC tells us to ignore benchmarks as One M9 threatens to cook an egg

Lewis Curdie  Mar. 17, 2015 at 16:00

Various concerns are creeping up about the HTC One M9 as the phone prepares for release, not least of all the suggestion that it gets hot enough – literally – to cook an egg.

But outspoken HTC Communications guy Jeff Gordon (who famously described the iPhone as “boring”) says we should disregard all these pre-release benchmarks; the phone ain’t even out yet.

Look: it’s the Sony Xperia Z4 (‘non-final’)

We’ve been jawing a fair bit about the LG G4 and even the iPhone 6S of late, but we haven’t heard a great deal about the Sony Xperia Z4 – other than the suggestion that it’ll launch in summer.

We’re about to right that particular wrong with a look at the “first 3D renderings” of the Sony Xperia Z4, a phone that doesn't look radically different from the Xperia Z3 at first glance, though there are - upon closer inspection - a few interesting points to note.

Dyson aims to double your smartphone battery life with $15 million investment

Smartphone technology continues to race along at a mind-boggling rate, with 8-core 64-bit processors and multiple gigabytes of RAM and QHD resolutions and 20MP cameras all very much a reality. Alas, one thing we’re not seeing much of is enhanced battery life, with many current phones demanding a daily charge.

James “Jimmy D” Dyson, for one, wants to see an improvement; he’s laid down $15 million on the figurative table, with a view to doubling smartphone battery life.
