Vectone offer FREE 3GB of data to apologise for downtime

Vectone offer FREE 3GB of data to apologise for downtime

Neotrix  Jul. 4, 2015 at 11:50

Vectone have been experiencing some rather large issues, meaning that many of their customers were left without any service at all. Vectone issued an apology via social media advising customers to reconfigure their network settings.

"All customers experiencing network problems are advised to re-configure their network settings. Even if you have already tried this, we recommend doing this one more time. Thereafter, if your problem remains unsolved, please get in touch with our Customer Service Team who will be happy to help"

It seems unclear as to when the service will be back to normal at this stage. We have had a report that Vectone are sending out text messages to customers offering free 3GB of data to make up for the downtime. All you will need to do it text "3GB" to 345 and you should be good to go. You may only be eligible if you receive the text, but there is no harm in trying, right? As i do not have a Vectone SIM handy i can't test this out, although we would definitely be interested to find out if any of you manage to get in on this!

The EE Power bar: Free or not too Free?

The EE Power bar: Free or not too Free?

Neotrix  Jun. 27, 2015 at 12:33

Earlier this year EE started to offer its customers a 2600mah Power bar to help them keep their devices charged on the go. To be eligible you need to have been with EE for at least 3 months and send a texts costing just 35p.

All this sounds like a great idea in theory, after all everyone loves a freebie don’t they? Well unfortunately it’s not quite that simple. Although at first glance it looks like EE are offering a great little power bank in return for a 35p text message. When in fact it turns out that customers are actually just hiring the power bank out for an 18 month period. When reading through the Terms & Conditions you can see quite clearly that the unit is just on loan

“2.3 A Power Bar is made available to you on a free to hire basis, under the terms of this agreement, for a maximum of 18 months. After 18 months, the Power Bar must be returned to EE and the Service will end”

EE may have busy customer service lines as the first wave of users come to the end of their 18 month agreement, especially since EE plan on charging customers £5 if they do not return the unit within 60 days after the hire term has ended.

"2.7 When this agreement expires or terminates (for mobile or broadband customer this will happen automatically if you chose to cancel your agreement with us for mobile or broadband services), you must return the Power Bar to an EE store within 60 days. If you don’t you’ll have to pay a charge to compensate us for replacing the Power Bar. Currently this is £5. For mobile and broadband customers, this will be applied to your bill. If you’re not an existing customer, we’ll contact you using the information supplied to us when you joined EE Power and we’ll issue a bill for the cost of replacing the Power Bar that has not been returned."

While all the advertisements looked great, I feel it was never clear that the power bank was in fact on loan. Many people regarded the device as a generous freebie, although this doesn’t mean that it’s not worth claiming one. The T&Cs just takes the shine off the whole thing. It is of course always worth reading the terms and conditions of any deal you enter into, but I do feel many people would have skipped them due to the prospect and excitement of a freebie.

Minion Flash drive keyrings available from £16.95

Neotrix  Jun. 24, 2015 at 16:51

Amazon now have 8GB USB 2.0 flash drives in the form of Minion keyrings! Personally i love a novelty flash drive and have quite a few in my ever growing collection. If you're looking for a high speed pen drive that will transfer your data collection before you can say "bottom" then you may be a little disappointed here. For every day use they are just fine and the kids will love them. The over all reviews look very good mentioning that they have a slight flex to them meaning they should be fairly hard wearing. There are four to choose from including; Carl, Dave, Stuart and Tim with prices ranging from £16.95 to £17.12.

Specifications

  • capacity: 8GB
  • USB Interface: 2.0
  • read speed: up to 18 , 4 MB / s

Security flaws found in over a hundred Android applications, including some big names!

Security flaws found in over a hundred Android applications, including some big names!

Neotrix  Jun. 20, 2015 at 13:35

When we download applications from the Google Play store, many of us assume that they are safe and secure. Unfortunately security researchers have recently detected over a hundred applications suffering from a HTTPS vulnerability issue. This gaping hole in security means that usernames and passwords could easily get stolen along with other private data. You may be thinking "I'll be fine, i only use applications from  well known companies and developers" although none of that really matters.

Many well known applications from the likes of Pizza Hut, Match.com, Safeway and even NBA Game Time have been affected by this.  It's pretty scary to think that you could be paying far more than you thought while innocently looking for the love of your life online.

With the HTTPS encryption not being implemented correctly across so many apps, fraudsters can get their hands on our private data relatively quickly and easily. It really is quite worrying when you hear about such a security breakdown in programs you use so often. All of this seems a little silly really considering the fix shouldn't be that difficult to implement.

The best way to deal with this issue for now would be to change your passwords via your PC if possible, especially if the accounts are at all tied to any payment details. As we currently don't have a full list of applications that are affected by this security flaw, i'd advise downloading and running AppBugs. The application is currently in beta and is developed by the same security researchers that uncovered these HTTPS issues in the first place. AppBugs should help identify any potential security issues on your device. It may also be a good idea to stay away from the offending applications until fixes are in place. If we hear any more about this we will of course update you as soon as possible.

Unlimited Texts, Minutes and 4Gb of Data for £11.99 via TPO on a 30 day rolling contract.

Unlimited Texts, Minutes and 4Gb of Data for £11.99 via TPO on a 30 day rolling contract.

Neotrix  Jun. 19, 2015 at 16:02

The people's Operator are offering Unlimited Texts, Minutes and 4Gb of Data for £11.99/pm via a 30 day rolling contract.

If you saw yesterdays SIM only deal from TPO and were perhaps put off a little by the price increase after the first 2 months, you may want to consider this slightly toned down version. It's £11.99 a month for unlimited calls/texts and 4GB of data. The differences with this deal over the "UK's Best Deal" is that you get 2GB less data usage, no £5 Costa Coffee Gift card and no introductory discount.

Both deals offer good value for money at this time, so i'd probably consider your data usage and go whichever suits you best. In the long term this deal will save you a few quid over the other rolling contract, which is great as long as you don't require the 6GB data allowance.  You can of course cancel whenever you like due it being a rolling contract deal. Also don't forget to check your phone supports EE SIM cards, as TPO Piggy back the EE network.

Lenovo Yoga 2 8 Inch Tablet in silver down to £139.99 via Amazon

The Levovo Yoga tablet gets some great reviews, and with it's specifications it looks like great value for money. Although it may be a little on the heavy side for a tablet, the great battery life and overall performance completely make up for that. Not to mention the built in kickstand that could come in handy for movie watching or even typing up documents. All in all I believe the Lenovo Tab is great value at £139.99.

Unlimited Mins/Texts and 6Gb of data for £3.99 + a FREE £5 Costa coffee gift card via TPO

Neotrix  Jun. 18, 2015 at 15:31

The People's Operator are offering unlimited minutes, texts and 6GB of data as well as a £5 Costa coffee gift card for £3.99 on a 30 day rolling contract for the first 2 months.

This price is only for the first 2 months, although as it's a rolling contract you can cancel at any time. The normal price for this SIM deal is £14.99 so this really is quite a hefty saving for the first couple of months. Standard, Micro and nano SIM cards are availble, so make sure you grab the right one for your handset. TPO piggy back the EE network so you will want to make sure that your current handset is unlocked accordingly.

Sky reveal a new Now TV box - While select retailers discount old units and subs to just £10

Sky reveal a new Now TV box - While select retailers discount old units and subs to just £10

Neotrix  Jun. 18, 2015 at 13:26

Sky have just revealed their brand new Now TV box, the unit is supposed to be beefed up performance wise and offer a much smoother user experience. Sky are saying that it's 5x faster than the original, which would be a welcomed upgrade.  As you can see from the image, the new box resembles the Roku 3. This could mean 1080p streaming may become an option in the future and with the addition of an ethernet socket, if your wifi connection is lacking for higher resolutions you now have a back up solution. The new unit will be available this August for £14.99.

Sky also announced that there will be a new monthly subscription for Sky Sports fans at £31.99 per month. The current day pass is £6.99 while the weekly pass sits at £10.99 this means that new monthly subscription will save you £11.97 over buying four of the week passes. That said though, £31.99 really is a lot of money to part with considering there are possibly better options for a little more per month if you want to sign up for a full on Sky subscription.

If you fancy grabbing the current Now TV box along with a subscription from £9.99, these are the current cheapest and well worth considering due to the savings on the passes alone.

Now TV with 3 Months Sky Entertainment Pass  - Argos - £9.99

Now TV with 3 Months Sky Entertainment Pass  - Tesco Direct - £10

Vodafone seem to be having problems when it comes to porting your old mobile number to their services

Vodafone seem to be having problems when it comes to porting your old mobile number to their services

Neotrix  Jun. 10, 2015 at 18:40

It seems Vodafone have been having issues when porting their new customers numbers over to the network. It normally takes up to 24 hours for a number to transfer from your old provider to Vodafone, although in some cases it appears there have been a mix-up on Vodafone's part causing huge delays.

Understandably customers are getting rather annoyed at this point, and contacting customer support to resolve the issue seems more hassle than it’s worth, especially after being passed from pillar to post to get a resolution.

In some instances there have been phone numbers that have been with the same customer for a number years, but when calling it you are greeted by another customer who is also waiting for their number to be ported over to Vodafone! This problem can and has affected small businesses that rely on such services to be swift and accurate, as being without a contact number for just a few days, could indeed lose you a lot of potential business. If you opt to have your banking alerts sent to your phone, or even medical information regarding appointments. Someone at the other end of the country could rather innocently be receiving them. We will of course update you if we hear any further information regarding these issues.
