Facebook and HTC working on new 'Facebook phone'

Facebook and HTC working on new 'Facebook phone'

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 26, 2012 at 19:00

Like two peas in a pod, it seems Facebook and HTC just can't stay away from each other. They've already had a collaborative attempt at Facebook phones before (although Facebook was keen to stress at the time, they weren't official Facebook handsets).

And now, they're back for more apparently. According to Bloomberg, the pair have been working on a phone which was due to be released this year but has now been pushed back.

LG profits up, mobile profits down

LG profits up, mobile profits down

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 26, 2012 at 10:30

Well, there's a bit of good news and bad news for LG!

The good news is that its profits are up. In fact, they appear to have soared in the second quarter of this year, reaching a a very respectable 159 billion won (that's £89 billion to you and I). But the bad news is that's not from the company's mobile business which it is desperately still flogging away at, trying to encourage growth.

RIM may give early versions of BlackBerry 10 to customers

RIM may give early versions of BlackBerry 10 to customers

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 25, 2012 at 19:00

Only yesterday, we were telling you how BlackBerry is going all Siri and introducing its own voice recognition in BB10 (praise the lord - because previous attempts at voice actions on RIM handsets have been dire!)

Now, that - and a host of other cool features - will be revealed to certain BlackBerry fans with RIM keen to whip up a bit of interest in what is, unfortunately, an OS launch that hasn't got the world waiting in the way iOS 6 or Android 4.1 Jelly Bean have.

Apple iPhone 5: on sale date pegged for September 21?

Apple iPhone 5: on sale date pegged for September 21?

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 25, 2012 at 18:30

Today has the letter 'y' in it - which surely means there's another iPhone 5 rumour out. This one claims the release date has been all but confirmed for September 21st. And we're talking purchase date here, not launch.

It's come all the way from French site App4phone.fr which says that a large Chinese accessory manufacturer has been told by Apple to be prepared for that day.

App Store rings the changes in iOS 6 beta

App Store rings the changes in iOS 6 beta

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 24, 2012 at 20:00

It's the little things in life that can sometimes irk us the most. Case in point here - Apple and the way it goes about downloading apps. In the times I've owned non-jailbroken iDevices, it's driven me to distraction having to input my iTunes password EVERY TIME I want to download an app.

But fear not - that little bit of the OS is on its way out with the latest iOS 6 BETA apparently removing the need to download apps from the App Store, albeit free ones or updates to those already downloaded.

Olympics 'will lead to rise in phone thefts'

Olympics 'will lead to rise in phone thefts'

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 24, 2012 at 19:00

The Olympics certainly have a lot to answer for in mobile land - just a few days ago, it was being reported that the gay social networking app, Grindr, had been bought down by the amount of contenders who'd arrived in London and were looking for a hookup.

Now, we're all being warned to keep on our guard because thousands of phones are set to be stolen. As many as 67,000 in fact - though that's a rather precise number and we don't quite understand how it would be reached.

HTC offloads big stake in Beats Audio

HTC offloads big stake in Beats Audio

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 24, 2012 at 10:31

Well, that love-in didn't last long, did it? HTC has apparently sold a chunk in Beats Audio - the sound solution it's been plugging heavily on its phones for the last year and was touting as the future.

In fact, half of its shares in the company have been offloaded back to BA in what is being described very diplomatically as "a realignment of their business agreement".

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean coming soon to Samsung Galaxy S II and S III?

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean coming soon to Samsung Galaxy S II and S III?

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 23, 2012 at 18:30

So, no surprise here then - Samsung is aiming, apparently, to push the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update out to Samsung Galaxy S III owners very soon - with August or September mooted, according to Sammobile.

It's great news considering the Galaxy S III is doing so well in the sales stakes - reports out at the weekend claimed that the flagship Samsung handset has passed 10m sales since launch two months ago.

Google Nexus 7 delivery delays: who is to blame?

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 20, 2012 at 19:45

You're waiting for your shiny new gadget to arrive. The date of release comes and goes - what's the worst that could happen? A delivery cock-up maybe!

That's what's apparently happened to some who're patiently awaiting a knock on the door from TNT with a shiny Nexus 7 clutched in the delivery man/woman's hands.

Early iPad photos from 2002 released

Early iPad photos from 2002 released

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 20, 2012 at 19:00

Steve Jobs once revealed that the iPad actually came before the iPhone. Yes, we know sales-wise, it didn't - the iPhone had a couple of years on the tablet.

But he said that they were actually looking into how to make a full web-browsing/media orientated portable device when he realised the design could actually be slimmed down to a phone size. And so, the iPhone was born.

O2 offers compensation for last week's problems

O2 offers compensation for last week's problems

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 19, 2012 at 19:30

I was at a concert last week when a friend of mine (the kind of guy who would need a surgical procedure to remove his phone from his hand) took out his iPhone and exclaimed he had no signal. Another friend offered his and nodded to the same issue.

And so it began. All over, came in reports of people losing their service, unable to text or call people, let alone surf the web.

iPhone 5 'not in final production stages'

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 19, 2012 at 19:00

We're whacking out, what, one iPhone 5 story a day now between us here at Mobot Towers. Or at the very least, one every other day.

Which of course means only one thing: momentum is steadily building and the days are counting down as we move towards the unique spectacle that is an iPhone launch.

Google 'always had eyes on the hardware business'

Google 'always had eyes on the hardware business'

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 18, 2012 at 19:30

You know how Apple used to be 'Apple Computer' but is now just 'Apple' since it's such a major success in the media market too? Well, looks like Google has long had similar ambitions in reverse, as it were.

That's according to former Google boss Eric Schmidt, who says even in the bygone days when Google was just a website, it had its eyes on the hardware business.

Fujitsu launching elderly-only smartphone

Fujitsu launching elderly-only smartphone

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 18, 2012 at 18:00

This morning, a friend of mine asked if I could recommend a phone that his mum could use. Something simple and user friendly. I thought of a HTC One S. But maybe I should have suggested Fujitsu.

Yes, it's not a major player in the mobile market over on these shores, but what it has done is identify that there is money to be made out of the elderly. And it's going after that lucrative, untapped market with some new vigour.

Has Samsung outed its first Windows Phone 8 handset?

If you've got a Windows Phone handset like - for argument's sake - one of the well publicised Nokia Lumias, you're no doubt well aware of the disappointing news that you won't be seeing any WP8 love.

If that's left you with a bit of a wandering eye, but you still want to stay faithful to the Metro-styled Microsoft OS, you might be interested in reading on.

Samsung hints at additional Galaxy S III colour variations for the UK

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 17, 2012 at 18:30

There seems to be a set pattern in mobile land these days: vendor announces new handset, vendor ships new handset, vendor enjoys huge sales and then announces it will also launch said handset in a variety of different colours.

And as if by coincidence, said new hues always seem to magically arrive right around the Christmas shopping period - especially with Pay As You Go models.

Apple iPhone 5 now 'in full production'

Apple iPhone 5 now 'in full production'

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 16, 2012 at 19:30

So, last week, we were talking about the possibility that Apple may be hoping to launch the iPhone 5 as early as August (pretty unlikely in our eyes, though).

Now, we're being told that whenever it is due to arrive, at least it's in full production. This is all according to a Japanese blog called Macotakara which tends to be fairly credible. It says it's got the info from sources in China and it is, indeed, expected for an autumn release.

In recent times, we've had the likes of Draw Something, Words With Friends, Cut The Rope and Fruit Ninja (the latter even a personal fave of David Cameron). And now, it's Amazing Alex.

Samsung Galaxy Note II 'to be announced on August 30th'

Samsung Galaxy Note II 'to be announced on August 30th'

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 13, 2012 at 19:00

Looks like Samsung is really pressing ahead to get the update to the Note (the imaginatively titled, Note II, we presume) out the door ASAP. Or at least before the iPhone 5.

Recently, Martin was pondering September - now that's been kind of revised by Korea's DDaily as the end of August. In fact, it reckons that Samsung is planning to hold an event at IFA in Berlin to show off the successor to what has, just in the space of around eight months, been an incredibly successful launch.

Sony explains why it still carries old logo on new handsets

Sony explains why it still carries old logo on new handsets

Phil Lavelle  Jul. 13, 2012 at 18:00

So, it looks like there's been a bit of confusion over this de-merger between Sony and Ericsson. Yes, the divorce is complete. Yep, they're all done and dusted. But still, the little swirly green logo is still present on some Xperia handsets being shipped as we speak.

So what is going on?! Well, rest assured, we can explain. Actually, TechRadar can - but let us surmise on their behalf.
