Main battery killer is the screen. Turn it off when you don't need to look at it.
Keep brightness to a minimum.
Next: turn WiFi and Bluetooth only on when you are actually using it.
Dito 3G - when you're not using mobile data for browsing etc, turn off 3G. Also turn it off when you're in an area where 3G reception is poor anyway.
You do not need 3G to receive calls and sms.

Apps: kill them when you're done using them. Don't let them run in the background.
Dito, disable all background sync etc IF NOT essential. Do you really need push email and streaming Twitter/FB updates? Set to manual update or every 30 minutes.

DELETE!!!! DELETE!!! DELETE! Any app you don't use: uninstall. Any video, photo, ebook or other file that you do not need: delete. Phone's resources are used to keep track of EVERYTHING. Photo thumbnails need to be rendered every time you open the gallery. File names need to be rendered everytime you open the file manager.
