Which uses less battery --- texting or data?

I was running really low on battery the other day but furiously engaged in some messaging! Then I realised I'm not sure which uses more battery - texting or data (Facebook messaging). Probably data, am I right? Or is it maybe negligible?

Course the screen will use more, so read fast, write fast and get the screen off..

Yep - data
Turn off 3g/mobile data and you can save juice by just texting instead. It's a thirsty component to have on when things are looking bleak battery wise.

Pondlife's right, if you're really low on battery juice, there are other priorities: crank down screen backlight to barely visible, kill all sound, switch off 3G (you need it neither for sms nor for small FB messages)... that'll double or triple whatever juice you've left.

Data uses more, but the display should be your primary concern, as Pondlife said.
