Do you think any of the big names will ever offer free apps on windows 7 phones?

As long as there is such an (almost) insignificant number of WP7 owners who are paying through the nose to add some value to their phone, it is doubtful.
WP7 apps are on average more expensive, WP 7 owners a proven to surf a lot more for apps - and the consensus is it is because the OS itself is fairly limited (no matter how 'smooth' etc).

Even Opera, whose goal it is to bring its browser to as many phones as possible have thus far shunned WP as "not worth the effort, yet" - though they made Opera Link for the platform.

All the usual signs indicate that Nokia too failed to lift the platform out of the depth of "too little, too late".

So, I'd say the missus has gotta be patient. Or trade up to a non M$ OS ;)
