Half a billion reasons to celebrate for Android

Half a billion reasons to celebrate for Android

Most of us would claim to be rational human beings at least some of the time, but on an iPhone Launch Day all bets are off and the mobile tech community tends to be either swooning at the Apple altar or sticking pins in hastily fashioned Tim Cook-alike dolls.

If you're in the first camp, you're not reading this right now anyway, but for the second lot, here's a small nugget of ammunition to help in the completely imaginary fight to the death against the enemy that is Apple: Google has now activated 500 million Android devices since the platform launched a few years back.

That's impressive stuff, and our thanks to Android product management director Hugo Barro for selflessly taking the time to share the news with the wider world. It's even more impressive when you consider the 250-million mark was only reached in January, and that 1.3 million devices are being added to the total every day.

All told, that means the frankly insane 1 billion activations milestone will be reached at some stage next year. At which point they will all rise up and take over the planet. Or something.

So pat yourself on the back, Android faithful. Because there may be hundreds of millions of other people around the world who are just like you, but at least you're not being dictated to by a piece of fruit.

I am one of those half a billion. And one of the 250 million this year.

but at least you're not being dictated to by a piece of fruit.
No, you're being dictated by the planet's most ruthless advertising company and lazy networks, who will gladly brand your device, but not update the firmware :p

Also...yawn (I had to write this a lot today) ... that 500,000,000 figure looks great until you admit it covers 1000 PLUS different devices vs a dozen or so iDevices. Not trolling - just saying ;) Take out the dozen or so blockbuster Android phones, and you see that most devices on Android don't sell.

This is just a reality sandwich... I don't care whether you fancy iOS, Android, WP or Palm OS... If it makes you happy.

Here's another perspective - money money money... where is it?
