A bit of advice on screens/displays!

I'm reading that the iPad has a 4:3 aspect ratio. My understanding is: I can still watch widescreen films, but they'd have black borders at the top and bottom? Is that right? ??

Yes, that's right. The huge majority of things filmed recently are in 16:9.

You can either choose that, or crop the picture. If you have an iPad 1 or 2 that's not too much of a problem because of the lower-res screen. On a Retina display though, the picture will be scaled up which isn't ideal.

Right. It's just like watching widescreen videos on a normal TV set.

Thanks guys! :) Next question ;)

Why is the iPad 4:3? My guess is something to do with apps and tying in with the iPhone...... But basically why isn't the iPad widescreen?

Thought films were largely 2.39:1 still?

It's a better resolution for browsing, apparently. At least I think that's the reason...

Doesn't tie in with the iphones resolution though as the old res and the current one are both 3:2..

I think it's to do with the fact that 4:3 screens worked out cheaper at the time of the original iPad launch. As they started with that ratio, they didn't want to alienate developers so they've stuck with it. That's my theory anyway :p
