Apple’s Reuse and Recycling Programme invites you to trade in your old Apple handset for a few bucks to put towards a new iPhone, but we’re hearing that the scheme is on the verge of expanding.

Anonymous sources say Apple will soon start accepting Android and BlackBerry handsets, from those looking to make the leap to the SS iPhone.

BlackBerry Passport looks delicious in limited edition black and gold

We’re quite used to seeing gold-coloured smartphones these days, including the rather attractive Nokia Lumia 930 and Lumia 830. Or, if you’ve more money than sense, you might fancy the actual gold iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Sticking with classy minimal gold colouring, we’re currently drooling over the BlackBerry Passport in black and gold.

BlackBerry denies it’s being bought by Samsung

Poor old BlackBerry continues to soldier on for now, doing its enterprise thing and occasionally churning out new consumer handsets, but it’s quite clear that the Canadian manufacturer would be happy if someone came along and snapped them up.

It was rumoured yesterday that Samsung might be interested in a bid, but BlackBerry has quickly moved to deny that the pair has even talked – never mind a confirmed acquisition.

Another week, another seven days closer to death. Or Christmas! That’s a slightly more positive way of looking at things.

The big story in mobile this week was BT entering exclusive negotiations to acquire EE (not O2, as we originally thought), while the rumoured OnePlus One mini got you all chatting.

If you thought the BlackBerry Passport was one of the strangest smartphone devices of the year, you ain’t heard nothin’ yet.

BlackBerry’s John Chen: don’t expect a Chinese buyout

BlackBerry’s John Chen: don’t expect a Chinese buyout

Lewis Curdie  Dec. 8, 2014 at 13:00

Ah, BlackBerry. Once a King of Mobile alongside Nokia (who-kia?), the Canadian manufacturer has endured several stinky years, with Mike “Lizard Man” Lazaridis, Jim “Silly” Balsillie and Thorsten “57 Varieties” Heins all made to walk the plank.

Things are a little more positive under new(ish) CEO John Chen, but as rumours of a buyout continue to swirl, he says we shouldn’t expect a successful bid from any of the Chinese smartphone players.

BlackBerry: trade your iPhone for a Passport and get up to $600

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 27, 2014 at 12:00

The BlackBerry Passport is easily one of our favourite phones of the year, shoving top-of-the-range specs in an unashamedly weird body with a square display and three-row physical keyboard.

It remains to be seen if consumers will pay much attention, but BlackBerry is doing its damnedest to tout its latest and greatest, with an iPhone "Trade Up" program offering up to $600. Er, in North America, at least.

What happened this week? The 0-10 Oakland Raiders beat the 7-3 Kansas City Chiefs; that was pretty weird. We won’t dwell too much on Scotland vs. England in the soccerball; that was just a friendly.

In mobile (that is, after all, why we’re here), Nokia surprised us with an Android Lollipop tablet, the N1, and Finnish startup Jolla secured over $1m in three days for its own take on the tablet thing.

BlackBerry Rio: high-end, all-touch, launching 2015?

Lewis Curdie  Nov. 21, 2014 at 11:30

It’s amusing that every time a new high-end BlackBerry phone is rumoured, the collective blogosphere wonders: ‘Could this be BlackBerry’s saviour?’ Never say never, I guess.

The latest candidate for reversing the Canadian manufacturer’s ailing fortunes is something called the BlackBerry Rio, an all-touch flagship.

Another week, another completely mixed bag of news from the world of mobile. Fortunately some mysterious hero has laid it all out below in chronological order. Yep.

In comments, there was abundant activity on these fellas: Impressive Xperia Z4 specs leaked as Sony kills the bi-annual flagship nonsense and Android Lollipop 5.0: ‘Ambient Display’ wakes your phone when you pick it up.
