Which is the best Blackberry – the 8320, 8520 or 8900?

I’m new to Blackberries. Is it basically the higher the number, the better the phone?

kind of... but then there is weird numbering if you look at different ranges like the Pearls, Curves, Bolds and now the Torch.
Although, hmmm, yeah: Bold 9780 and Torch 9800 are the most highly specced ones.
But it's all relative: if you rarely get 3G coverage, the 8520 is a decent phone - why pay for the 3G radio if you can't make use of it? Plus, Blackberry's data compression technology means even with lousy 2G speeds your mail comes through in no time, and Opera Mini is available for all BB's, so browsing on 2G is possible too.
The 'consensus' is that the newer models with optical d-pads are better than the ones with the scroll ball (the scroll balls tend to accumulate dirt and grease, and need repairs after a while).

I think I will just delve into the specs of the various ones and see which best suits my needs. I like the sound of the 3G radio though, I like a bit of Radio 4 :)

No, sorry, I meant the 3G telephone/data radio! It's not a radio! Apologies for the confusion!
