Blackberry BBM - monthly fee - what am I paying for?

Currently got a BB as a 2nd phone for business, and pay for the service in addition to my contract. What will I loose if I don't use this with the phone? I don't use BBM so its no big loss. Does email stop working? Just trying to figure out if I am wasting money!

There seem to be workarounds like the one above, but they depend on BB OS version, methinks.

Of course, you could get apps from non-appworld sources, such as Crackberry etc

Yes, email, BBM, browser and many 3rd party apps' data travels via Blackberry's BIS. Advantage: they compress data server-side, so you use less data, and even on cr*ppy 2G you can still tweet, mail and browse. You can of course use a 3rd party email client and use your network's internet access point (APN). But that will use more data than BIS, and you may end up paying more for data than the BB add-on costs. It depends on your contract, though.

Thanks Jan, understand that blackberry compresses the data. But I would not class myself as a high user at all. Considering going with the Three sim only deal, 200 mins and 500mb data. So I guess just as long as I can access the blackberry app world for updates, and get my mail though another client there is no real advantage of paying the fee..?

oops, I forgot about the Appworld. Don't think that'll work without BIS... lemme see ;)

I'd stick with BIS, you pretty much cripple most internet functions on a BB if you choose not to bother paying for BIS.
