RIM rolls out BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 update

The BlackBerry PlayBook wasn’t exactly the resounding success story Canadian manufacturer RIM was hoping for. Quite the opposite, in fact.

However, Research In Motion still has plenty of love for its tablet users, and as such it’s fired out the spanking new BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 update.

64GB BlackBerry PlayBook for £129!

Over at PC World and Dixons, the BlackBerry PlayBook dropped to £129 and £149 for the 16 and 32GB models respectively, however the 64GB unit was – until recently – a wee bit more expensive at £249.

But what’s this? The 64GB BlackBerry PlayBook is now £129. Yes, £129 for a 64GB BlackBerry PlayBook. I’m currently hovering over the “Buy or Reserve” button.

Tablets under £200

There was a time when most of the big name tablets, even the 7in ones, were priced similarly to the iPad. Check out this guide from July 2011, including the 16GB Wi-Fi only HTC Flyer at £479.99. Sweet Moses, what were you thinking, HTC?

However, Bob Dylan has written a song about tablets called "The times they are a-changin’", essentially detailing how you can now grab various slates – some old, some new – for less than £200. That’s more like it, man.

RIM's 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet breaks cover

RIM's 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet breaks cover

Martin James  Aug. 3, 2012 at 10:00

We looked last night at RIM's troubles and CEO Thorsten Heins' hopes that BlackBerry 10 OS will be the saving grace of a company that has seen things take a serious downturn over the past couple of years.

That's in no small part due to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, but RIM isn't giving up the ghost just yet on its tablet ambitions, and has just announced its supercharged 4G LTE successor, set to go on sale in just a week's time.

BlackBerry PlayBook 10in pops up in Vietnam

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 30, 2012 at 16:00

A 10in BlackBerry PlayBook was rumoured pretty much as soon as news of the 7in model broke, however the plans were ultimately shelved after the colossal failure (is that too harsh?) of the original.

But what’s this guy? Yep, it’s a 10in BlackBerry PlayBook, courtesy of Tinhte – a Vietnamese forum. Is RIM planning 10in PlayBook action after all?

RIM: developers not abandoning BlackBerry 10

RIM: developers not abandoning BlackBerry 10

Lewis Curdie  Jul. 16, 2012 at 16:00

A recent report by Baird Equity Research suggested that developers were losing interest in BlackBerry 10, leaving a small but loyal clan of devotees.

However, RIM’s Alec Saunders has quickly moved to quash those rumours, and conversely suggests that developers are “amazed” by BlackBerry 10.

RIM calling time on 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook

RIM calling time on 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook

Martin James  Jun. 8, 2012 at 10:30

Thinking of getting yourself a BlackBerry PlayBook anytime soon? Um OK, well I'll tell you anyway. It seems the entry-level 16GB variant is being phased out, leaving just the 32GB and 64GB models in RIM's tablet lineup.

The company has confirmed that production of the entry-level model has ceased, and that once current stocks are sold out that'll be that.

Angry Birds Space available on BlackBerry PlayBook but still not Windows Phone

Phil Lavelle  Apr. 25, 2012 at 09:30

It caused a bit of a stir when it landed on iOS and Android earlier this year, clocking up 20m downloads in a week. And we know some of you are desperate to know when Angry Birds Space will arrive at Windows Phone's door.

But if you're a BlackBerry Playbook owner, we have good news today in that you can now get it for the RIM tab and enjoy a few jealous stares from those WinPho types.

RIM to cut off Android app sideloading for PlayBook users

RIM is treading a fine line with the whole sideloaded Android apps on the PlayBook tablet thing: the more apps that are available, the better for consumers.

But if sideloading also means sidestepping when it comes to costs and quality, the very developers RIM is trying to woo will be alienated. So it's decided to nip the whole thing in the bud.

Leaked marketing doc promises BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 on February 21

Lewis Curdie  Feb. 20, 2012 at 14:00

Last week we heard that BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 would be dropping on February 21 (i.e. tomorrow), and a leaked marketing document gives credence to that notion – and then some.

Said document spills the beans on various BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0-related goodness.
