Do BlackBerrys take good pictures?
I realise it'll vary from model to model but do BlackBerry phones generally take good pictures or are they mainly meant for typing and email?

Generally, they're not so good. The Bold 9900 takes the best pictures, AFAIK. Even then it's outclassed by many other smartphones.

Yes, the Bold 9900 and 9780 have the best cams and they are not good for anything but the most fleeting snapshop. Even 3rd party cam and photo apps for BB ALL suck. Symbian phones did a better job 5 years ago.
