With Block Shooter, Beijing-based developer Wode Mobile clearly set out to create a new Angry Birds. Which is arguably somewhat of a lost cause. An Angry Birds clone, even a good one, is inevitably destined to play second fiddle. The success of Angry Birds has been phenomenal, and it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see that again with something so similar. It’d make much more sense to develop something fresh, new and exciting.
On the other hand, Block Shooter is actually pretty good, and hence an easy option for Angry Birds fans looking for more of the same.
Block Shooter is yet another “physics based” action game for the iPhone. The aim is to shoot all the red blocks off the screen using an arsenal of yellow balls. You have an unlimited supply of small, medium and large balls, however they cost 5, 10 and 15 points respectively. Each stage has a target score that you must reach to progress, so firing off loads of big balls, for example, won’t cut the mustard.
To mix things up, Block Shooter introduces a couple of different balls, namely an iron ball and a bomb. The environments change too, with stone, snow and jelly. There are also blue blocks that must be avoided; knocking them off the screen costs you valuable points.
On the whole, Block Shooter is actually surprisingly good. The levels are generally really well thought out, and larger balls have to be used sparingly; there’s little margin for error.
At the end of the day, though, Block Shooter can’t quite match Angry Birds’ charm, and both cost 59p on the App Store. As such, Block Shooter can only really be recommended if you’ve completely exhausted Angry Birds.
Oh, one final point before you decide whether or not to part with your hard-earned 59p. At the moment there are just 36 stages, though Wode Mobile promises “new levels and features” monthly.
- Easy to pick up
- Well thought out levels
