What does a blue circle mean next to an iPhone app?

Sometimes I get blue circles beside the name of an iPhone app.

It means that it's a new app or a newly updated app.

redredrum,
I gather from your question that you have automatic updates for apps enabled. I would disable that. Sometimes you have a perfectly great app, and the dev/s do something that is really annoying... kill a feature, introduce a bug or whatnot. I'd always update apps manually AFTER reading the most up to date comments and reviews.
