I have an Acer Liquid MT for "backup"... The, admittedly, obsolete plastick screen aside, I like it. 800 mHz processor sounds lame in this GHz market, but it drives things along nicely. Once you get used to Acer's UI, it becomes quite the nice utility. Battery life beats my old Desire's. In fact, my impression is it is one of the best Android performers in terms of battery... Audio player and sound are excellent. If you use good earphones or connect it to a hifi you'll be blown away.
Gingerbread - now I reckon it might take a while yet.
But do make sure to visit Acer's Snartphone support pages! End of June they released an update that fixed plenty of bugs and added some features. Since then, it's become a much better phone.
I'm not saying it's great. The camera sucks but most 5MP Android cams do - even on much more expensive phones. The screen definitely needs a protector - the plastick will scratch, and frankly, marketing a 'Metal' device with a plastick screen? In 2010/11? But hey...sub-300 bucks.
Overall I'd say it's a decent Android entry with a unique UI (you can switch it off if you don't like it), good battery and, in its pricerange, excellent multimedia support. Is it pretty? Who knows. Is it a bit chunky for a 3.6'' screener? Yes. But if the smaller-screened alternatives aren't for you or are a bit too HTC, then okay. I probably wouldn't buy it again because of the plastick screen not being scratchproof (though, it IS very responsive/lagfree)...I can be rough with my phone.
I had a Gingerbread Sony Ericsson Arc and for 2 weeks a Samsung Galaxy SII - and though I can't speak for others, I find the absence of Gingerbread nothing to pull out my hair. I'm much more impressed by Acer fixing pretty much all bugs reported...
