Has anyone ever bought a refurb from a carphone warehouse company?

Im currently looking into the htc sensation which is available as a refurbished phone from 12.81 a month (that sounds like a commercial) but i was wondering if anyone had any experience of buying a refurb and had any issues with it?

thanks

What condition does their definition of "refurbished", say? Tell me that and I can tell you, from a legal stance, where you'd be if it was a mess when you got it.

Orange panther 20.50

thats the one im looking at... as a back up plan.

As new means...well...as new. The condition in which you would expect that product to be in if it was brand new. All you're losing is some warranty time as HTCs normally have a 24 month warranty. Though you'd be covered by it being reasonable to expect a phone to last as long as it's contract. Bit more fuss to enforce than a proper warranty but any threat of trading standards and they'll soon give in. 12 quid a month is a bargain for a Sensation, even if it's the original.

I feel I should say, film the unboxing of your phone, then you have cold hard evidence if it's broken or scratched when you get it. Remember to make extra care to film yourself breaking the seals on the box. CPW can be pretty dodgy when they feel like it...

i mean not the best contract in the world granted at 100 mins unlimited texts and 500mb internet but its 20.5 before redemption which is normal but after redemption its just over half what im paying now and it is a nice phone... not the best granted but worth considering if three screw me lol.

it does say there maybe some cosmetic damage...

Refurbished phones
Our deals come with a 'refurbished' mobile phone. This means you can get a great phone, in full working order, for even better value than if you bought a 'brand new' version..

What are refurbished phones?

Refurbished phones have been returned to us by customers who bought them and then returned them under our 7-day money back guarantee.
All these phones are fully inspected, tested and repackaged by our qualified engineers.
They all come with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty.

How are refurbished phones different?

A refurbished phone will come in a different box to the original.
The box will always include the handset, battery, charger and manual. We can't guarantee that any other accessories will be included.
There may be slight cosmetic flaws to a refurbished phone or its box - these will not affect the phone’s performance in any way.

but considering i would still have the 7 day distance selling regulation..

That's not a lot of mins...depends how often you call people. Have a look on your bills how many mins on average you've used each month over the course of this contract.

DSR covers you mate. I was thinking of you buying it from a CPW store, my bad :p.

Treab  Dec. 27, 2011 at 23:58

yeah i did ;) im more of a texter tbh. so 100-200 should be enough for me...

the only problem is next year i need to get a job (i.e. temp hca roles so i may need the phone more...)

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 28, 2011 at 00:06

I know what you mean about being more of a texter, I rarely ever make a mobile phone call. I make a fair few in my office and on my landline, but rarely on my mobile (aided by the fact I'm on PAYG and don't pay for any mins :p).

I'm assuming as a healthcare assistant working part-time you wouldn't get a company contract phone?

Treab  Dec. 28, 2011 at 00:08

... so naive ;) i spent 10 months working as a lone worker in the community without a phone... (which apparently was supplied at one point lol) in a hospital no need for one...

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 28, 2011 at 00:20

My work contract sits in a drawer never being used, if I wouldn't get fired I'd give it to you but if I got found out, I'd be looking for work very soon :/. My boss is...well...he pays me I suppose...lets leave that there.

Treab  Dec. 28, 2011 at 00:27

he obviously pays you well to afford a new 500 quid phone every 12 months :p

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 28, 2011 at 00:49

I do have to sell the old one to afford the new one. As I use it for business contacts I can write the VAT off as well. I'm not complaining about my pay though, it keeps my family comfortable enough :). Do you have any idea how much you're Hero would be worth if you sold it? Could help pay for a few months of your new contract...

Treab  Dec. 28, 2011 at 00:56

100 ish maybe. tbh its worthwhile keeping her as a payg backup. she can still stand tall enough and with the bumps and scrapes its probably only going to get 70 before a buyer moans its too beaten up..

plus if i got the sensation i would be saving £5 a month before redemption which would help as i live off my nhs bursary.

Treab  Dec. 28, 2011 at 01:59

This just gets better...

i found it on t-mobile 300 texts 300 mins unlimited data 20.42 by redemption 12.32 thats around 295 for 2 years (minus 30 quidco)

Treab  Dec. 29, 2011 at 14:31

Aha this gets better still. i asked esave about the warranty based on htc usually offering 2 years... and they confirmed it still applies a brand new 2 year warranty on refurbs.. :D

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 29, 2011 at 15:18

I'm verging on recommending you buying it now because the probability it's around in two months time is very small...

Treab  Dec. 29, 2011 at 16:52

Now now matt. dont be a pessimist... worst case scenario i see what three offers and i get a different phone...

hell i can get a new XE for 21.50 a month and 19.99 upfront ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 29, 2011 at 16:55

That's a lot more than 12.80ish a month over a two year contract. From what I've heard 3's retention deals aren't as good as the bigger network's.

Treab  Dec. 29, 2011 at 16:56

true. but to go for it now would mean buying out my contract i cant afford to do that (50 quid are you mad) and then buying it for 20.42 this month...

and do keep up matt... ive found a contract for 12.32 ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 29, 2011 at 16:57

An extra £230 to be precise. Nearly double the total cost...

matt101101 / MOD  Dec. 29, 2011 at 16:57

I suppose even if you can't get this deal, there'll be another one by Feb.

Treab  Dec. 29, 2011 at 16:58

theirs that pessimistic attitude again ;)

worst case scenario i go 30 day sim only till i find a good deal again.
